Product Description
Rowan Savoy from The Felted Tweed Colours Collection is a stunning gradually striped poncho that is knit in one piece and then folded and seamed. A simple slip stitch pattern creates texture across the entire piece. Rowan Felted Tweed has been a classic go-to yarn for many years, with its tweedy blend of Merino wool, alpaca, and viscose that works up beautifully and comes in an impressive color palette. Rowan took colors curated by Kaffe Fasset and created Rowan Felted Tweed Colour just when we thought it couldn't get any better.

Rowan Savoy Knitted Cape and Poncho
What is Being Made
The Rowan Savoy is an intermediate-level knitted poncho designed by Martin Storey. This versatile garment is worked from the side, creating a draped silhouette suitable for multiple bust sizes ranging from 71-97 cm to 132-157 cm. The poncho construction method allows for easy customization and a comfortable, flowing fit that works across various body types.
Techniques Used
This poncho is knitted using a circular needle worked in flat rows (back and forth), rather than in the round, despite the circular needle's typical application. The primary technique featured is a decorative slip-stitch pattern that creates visual interest throughout the garment. The construction begins by casting on stitches and working vertically to the desired length before binding off. The finishing process involves strategic seaming to shape the neckline and shoulder line, with one side left intentionally open for the poncho's characteristic drape and ease of wear.
Stitches Used
The main stitch pattern is a slip-stitch fancy pattern that repeats over two rows. Row 1 consists of knit stitches alternating with slipped stitches (worked as if to purl with yarn forward), creating a textured surface. Row 2 is worked entirely in purl stitches. This two-row repeat is maintained throughout the entire length of the poncho, creating a consistent, professional appearance.
Materials Required
- Yarn: Rowan Felted Tweed Colour (50g balls) – quantities vary by size: 6 balls for the smallest size, 7 balls for the medium size, and 8 balls for the largest size. The photographed sample uses Magenta 023.
- Needles: One circular needle in size 3¾ (3.25mm), at least 60 cm in length, to accommodate the large stitch count while working flat rows.
- Gauge: 10 cm measures 21 stitches and 39 rows in the slip-stitch pattern using size 3¾ needles.
Construction Details
The poncho begins with casting on between 118 and 150 stitches depending on the desired size. The garment is worked to a total height ranging from 132 to 165 cm before binding off loosely. After completion, the poncho is pressed according to standard finishing instructions. The final shaping involves folding the poncho in half to align the cast-on and bind-off edges, then seaming the side edges together from the fold point up to marked positions (29-31 cm depending on size) to create the shoulder and side seams. The opposite edges remain open, allowing the characteristic poncho drape and providing the neckline opening.
