Rowan Liverpool Street Hat by Georgia Farrell

What is Being Made

The Liverpool Street Hat is an intermediate-level knitted craft hat designed to fit an average adult head. This is a single-size, structured hat featuring a turnback brim and a shaped crown, created using the downloadable PDF pattern ZB278-00007-ENP from Rowan's collection.

Techniques Used

This knitting project employs several key techniques suitable for intermediate knitters. The hat begins with ribbed knitting to create the turnback brim section, which provides elasticity and structure. The pattern uses magic loop method or double-pointed needles for working in the round, allowing seamless construction throughout the crown shaping. Increases are incorporated early in the pattern using yarn forward stitches (Kfb), while decreases using knit two together (K2tog) are strategically placed during the crown shaping phase to create the hat's fitted silhouette. The pattern transitions between different stitch combinations to build textural interest and structural integrity.

Stitches Used

  • Knit (K) – the fundamental stitch forming the base fabric
  • Purl (P) – used in combination with knit stitches to create ribbed sections
  • 2x1 Rib – alternating two knit stitches with one purl stitch, worked on the wrong side of the turnback brim
  • 1x2 Rib – alternating one purl stitch with two knit stitches, worked on the right side
  • Kfb (Knit Front and Back) – an increase stitch used to add stitches before transitioning to the main pattern
  • K2tog (Knit Two Together) – a decrease stitch used throughout the crown shaping to reduce stitch count and create the tapered crown

Materials

The Liverpool Street Hat is worked in Alpaca Soft DK yarn, a delicate and breathable fiber ideal for a craft hat. Each colorway requires two 50-gram balls of yarn, providing approximately 108 yards per ball. The pattern offers three colorway options: Colourway 1 features Green Teal (213) paired with Baby Blue (224); Colourway 2 combines Mulberry (207) with Hyacinth (225); and Colourway 3 pairs Hunter Green (214) with Autumn Gold (220).

Needles required include a set of four double-pointed 3½mm (US 4) needles or a 3½mm circular needle no longer than 40 cm (16 inches) for the ribbed brim section, and a set of four double-pointed 4mm (US 6) needles or a 4mm circular needle no longer than 40 cm (16 inches) for the main pattern and crown shaping. An optional longer 4mm circular needle may be used as an alternative during the shaping phase.

Pattern Structure

The hat construction begins with a turnback brim worked in 2x1 rib on the wrong side, followed by 1x2 rib on the right side, establishing a reversible edge. The main body features a 16-round pattern repeat combining knit and purl stitches in a structured sequence, worked until the piece measures approximately 9.5 centimeters from the top of the rib section. The crown is then shaped through a series of decreases that progressively reduce the stitch count, creating a fitted closure at the top of the hat.
