Rowan Position from Abstract is a lovely women’s pullover that showcases a stepped, asymmetrical intarsia design on the front knit in Felted Tweed. The sweater also showcases a turtleneck, set-in long sleeves, and contrasting rib pattern at the neck, cuffs, and hem. Position is knit flat in pieces from the bottom up and then seamed. Rowan Felted Tweed is a luxurious blend available in a delightful array of heathered shades. The textured and colorwork pattern is in chart form only.
The Rowan Position is an intermediate-level knitted sweater designed by Georgia Farrell. This garment is available in nine sizes, ranging from 71-76 cm bust (28-30 inches) through to 152-157 cm bust (60-62 inches), with actual garment bust measurements spanning from 95.5 cm to 177.5 cm. The sweater features a structured construction with shaping at the back neck and front, making it a fitted, tailored piece suitable for various body sizes.
Intarsia Technique: The pattern employs the intarsia method for color work, allowing for detailed patterning across the front of the garment. This technique involves using separate lengths of yarn for different colored sections, creating a smooth, professional finish without the bulk of traditional stranded colorwork.
Cable Work: The pattern incorporates cable stitches, indicated by the special abbreviation C2B (slip next stitch onto cable needle and leave at back of work, knit one, then knit one from cable needle). This adds textural interest and dimension to the design.
Shaping and Decreasing: The sweater features deliberate shaping at the back neck with cast-off sections and decreasing rows, creating a professional neckline finish. Similar shaping techniques are applied to the front of the garment for a coordinated, well-fitted silhouette.
Yarn: The pattern uses Rowan Felted Tweed, a versatile worsted-weight yarn supplied in 50-gram balls. Three colors are required:
Needles: The pattern requires two pairs of needles. A 3¼mm (US 3) needle is used for the ribbed cast-on and initial rows, while a 4mm (US 6) needle is used for the main body of the garment. A cable needle is also necessary for executing the cable stitches.
Tension: The pattern specifies a tension of 22 stitches and 30 rows to 10 centimeters, measured over stockinette stitch using the 4mm (US 6) needles. Achieving correct tension is essential for obtaining the proper finished measurements.
The pattern uses special abbreviations including wyaf (with yarn at front of work), which is relevant when working purl stitches and yarn-over techniques. The construction begins with a cast-on using yarn C in the smaller needle size, establishing a firm foundation before transitioning to the larger needles and stockinette stitch body. The front features a charted intarsia pattern that is worked simultaneously with the main fabric, requiring careful attention to color placement and pattern alignment.
