Rowan Tropical Brocade Knitted Sweater

What is Being Made

The Rowan Tropical Brocade is an intermediate-level knitted sweater designed to fit bust measurements ranging from 71-76 cm up to 152-157 cm across nine size options. This garment features a structured construction with shaped shoulders, back neck shaping, and front neck shaping, creating a fitted silhouette suitable for various body sizes.

Knitting Techniques Used

This design employs several essential knitting techniques to achieve its finished structure. The pattern requires cast-off shaping at regular intervals to form the shoulder line, with multiple cast-off rows worked across the back piece to create proper shoulder slope. Neck shaping is incorporated on both the back and front pieces, using progressive cast-offs to form a comfortable neckline opening. The pattern also involves working in the round or flat with careful stitch management, as indicated by the detailed row-by-row instructions for shoulder and neck construction. Chart-based colorwork is a central technique, with the pattern referencing specific chart rows throughout the construction process, suggesting a multi-color brocade design element that requires following a stitch-by-stitch pattern guide.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The Tropical Brocade utilizes stockinette stitch as the foundation fabric, maintained throughout the garment while working the decorative pattern. The pattern incorporates chart-based colorwork that creates the brocade effect, requiring knitters to follow a detailed chart that extends to row 156 on the front piece. The pattern maintains stitch count consistency while introducing color changes and pattern repeats, with the chart rows serving as the primary guide for stitch placement and color selection. Ribbed edgings are implied through the neckband construction, which involves slipping stitches onto holders for later finishing.

Materials: Yarn and Needles

The Rowan Tropical Brocade is worked in Rowan Felted Tweed, a 50-gram yarn weight that provides excellent stitch definition for colorwork patterns. The design incorporates six carefully selected colors from the Felted Tweed range: Ancient (172), Vaseline Green (204), Alabaster (197), Scree (165), Candy Floss (221), Pink Bliss (199), and Barbara (200). Yarn quantities vary by size, ranging from 9 to 15 balls depending on the finished bust measurement selected. While specific needle sizes are not detailed in the provided pattern excerpt, the Felted Tweed yarn typically works best with needles appropriate for its weight to achieve proper gauge and definition of the brocade colorwork pattern.

Pattern Structure and Construction

The sweater is constructed in separate pieces: a back piece and a front piece, each with detailed shaping instructions. The back piece features progressive shoulder shaping through multiple cast-off rows, with the largest sizes requiring cast-offs of 10-11 stitches at the beginning of rows. The front piece includes additional neck shaping beyond the back, with cast-offs of 3 stitches followed by 2-stitch decreases over alternate rows to create a gradual neckline. The pattern references a chart system extending beyond row 156, indicating a complex colorwork design that requires careful attention to stitch placement and color changes throughout the garment's construction.
