Rowan Aune Mittens by Arne & Carlos

What is Being Made

The Rowan Aune Mittens are a pair of knitted mittens designed to fit an average size woman's or man's hand. These mittens feature a classic construction with a shaped thumb gusset and are available in two sizes: Small and Large. The design combines traditional mitten shaping with contemporary colorwork, making them a versatile accessory for everyday wear.

Knitting Techniques Used

The Aune Mittens employ several key knitting techniques that create both structure and visual interest:

  • Seamless, Worked in the Round: The mittens are constructed seamlessly using the round method, which eliminates the need for seaming and creates a smooth, professional finish. This technique is worked on a set of double-pointed needles, allowing for continuous circular knitting without interruption.
  • Bottom-Up Construction: The mittens are worked from the cuff upward toward the fingers, allowing for easy adjustments and a natural fit.
  • Stranded Colorwork: The pattern incorporates stranded colorwork techniques, where multiple yarn colors are carried across the fabric to create the design. This method adds visual depth and interest while maintaining the integrity of the knit structure.
  • Thumb Gusset Shaping: The pattern includes a shaped thumb gusset created through strategic increases (M1R and M1L increases) that gradually expand the fabric to accommodate the thumb. This shaping technique ensures a comfortable, well-fitted thumb opening.
  • Decreases for Finishing: The pattern uses slip-stitch decreases (sl 1, K1, psso) and knit-two-together decreases (K2tog) to shape the mitten top and create a neat closure.

Stitches Used

The Aune Mittens are worked primarily in stockinette stitch (st st), created by knitting every round. This foundational stitch provides a smooth, flat fabric that serves as the perfect base for the stranded colorwork pattern. The pattern is guided by a chart that indicates color placement across the rounds. Additional stitch techniques include make-one increases (M1L and M1R) for the thumb gusset shaping and various decreases for finishing the mitten top.

Materials: Yarn and Needles

The Rowan Aune Mittens are designed to be worked in Rowan Felted Tweed, a versatile yarn available in five beautiful colorways. Each mitten requires one 50-gram ball of yarn per color used. The specific colors included in this pattern are:

  • A: Alabaster 197
  • B: Seafarer 170
  • C: Lotus Leaf 205
  • D: Mineral 181
  • E: Zinnia 198

The pattern is worked on double-pointed needles in two sizes: a set of 5 needles in 3mm (UK size 11 / US size 2/3) for the initial cast-on and cuff, and a set of 5 needles in 3¼mm (UK size 10 / US size 3) for the main body of the mittens. The recommended tension is 28 stitches and 31 rows to 10 centimeters measured over patterned stockinette stitch using the 3¼mm needles.

Pattern Details and Skill Level

The Aune Mittens pattern is suitable for knitters with intermediate skills who are comfortable working in the round on double-pointed needles and following a stranded colorwork chart. The pattern includes detailed instructions for shaping the thumb gusset through increases worked at specific intervals, dividing stitches for the thumb opening, and executing decreases to finish the mitten top. The pattern accommodates both Small and Large sizes, with specific stitch counts and round numbers provided for each size throughout the instructions.
