Rowan Garrick Knitted Sweater

What is Being Made

The Rowan Garrick is an intermediate-level knitted sweater designed to fit chest measurements ranging from 81-86 cm (32-34 inches) up to 132-137 cm (52-54 inches). This pullover-style garment features a classic construction with shaped shoulders, a back neck opening, and a front neck shaping for a refined fit. The finished garment chest measurements span from 93.5 cm (36¾ inches) to 143.5 cm (56½ inches), offering multiple size options for different body proportions.

Knitting Techniques Used

The Garrick employs several intermediate knitting techniques that contribute to its sophisticated appearance and structure. Stranding is used to incorporate the two-color design, with yarn not in use carried across the back of the work. The pattern requires careful shaping at the shoulders through strategic cast-offs worked at the beginning of rows, creating a tailored silhouette. Neck shaping is achieved through decreasing stitches at the neck edge over multiple rows, with additional decreases worked on alternating rows for a gradual, professional-looking neckline. The construction involves working each side of the neck separately after dividing stitches, a technique that allows for precise shaping of both front and back necklines. The pattern maintains stitch pattern continuity throughout all shaping, requiring the knitter to keep the patterned stockinette stitch correct while executing decreases and cast-offs.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The primary stitch used throughout the Garrick is patterned stockinette stitch, which forms the foundation of the garment. The pattern is worked over a tension of 24 stitches and 24 rows to 10 centimeters, establishing the fabric's drape and structure. The two-color stranding technique creates a jacquard-style pattern across the body of the sweater, with yarn B (Night) introduced after the initial ribbed cuff worked in yarn A. The ribbed cuff, worked on smaller needles, provides elasticity and a finished edge at the lower body.

Materials: Yarn and Needles

The Garrick is designed to be worked in Rowan Denim Revive, a specialized yarn that offers unique properties for this project. Two colorways are specified: Yarn A in Blue Wash (color 211) and Yarn B in Night (color 213). Yarn quantities vary by size, ranging from 7 to 11 balls of 50-gram weight for Yarn A and 6 to 10 balls for Yarn B, depending on the chosen size. The pattern requires two pairs of needles in different sizes: 3¼mm (US 3) needles for the ribbed cuff and initial cast-on, and 3¾mm (US 5) needles for the main body and patterned sections. This needle size progression allows the knitter to create a fitted ribbed edge that transitions into the larger-gauge patterned body, a standard technique for achieving proper garment fit and proportion.
