Product Description
Rowan Meredith from Pebble Island is a stunning women’s dress with long cuffs designed to be worn down over the fingers, with a thumbhole detail to keep you cozy on your walk along the beach or tucked up at home. The dress is knit in two tonal colors, and the Fair Isle yoke pattern trails down into a fly stitch across the body and is finished at the wide hem with a back kick vent. Meredith is knit flat in pieces from the bottom up and then seamed. The Fair Isle and Fly stitch patterns are in chart form only.

Rowan Meredith Knitted Dress
What is Being Made
The Rowan Meredith is an intermediate-level knitted dress designed by Erika Knight. This downloadable PDF pattern provides instructions for creating a fitted, waist-shaping dress available in nine size options, ranging from a bust circumference of 71-76 cm up to 152-157 cm. The finished garment measurements span from 84.5 cm to 166.5 cm in bust circumference, accommodating a wide range of body sizes and fit preferences.
Knitting Techniques Used
This pattern employs Fair Isle colorwork as its primary decorative technique, worked in the round using a charted grid system. The Fair Isle method involves carrying multiple yarn colors across rounds and working them according to a stitch-by-stitch chart, creating intricate patterned fabric. The dress is constructed using seamless in-the-round knitting on circular needles, which eliminates seaming and creates a continuous tube of fabric.
Shaping is achieved through strategic decreasing techniques. The pattern incorporates two main decrease methods: knit two stitches together (a right-leaning decrease) and symmetric single decrease (a left-leaning decrease worked symmetrically), which are placed strategically at marked points to create balanced waist shaping. The dress features a structured waist with decreases worked at regular intervals across multiple rounds to create a fitted silhouette.
Stitches Used
- Stockinette stitch (garter stitch equivalent in the round) – the base fabric, worked by knitting every round
- Fair Isle pattern stitches – worked from charted grid A, combining two colors per round
- Knit two together – a decrease stitch for waist shaping
- Symmetric single decrease – a paired decrease technique for balanced shaping
- Stitch markers – used to denote pattern repeats and shaping points
Materials and Gauge
The pattern calls for Rowan Pebble Island yarn (50g balls), a wool-based fiber. Two colorways are specified: Teaberry 024 and Rockhopper 027, which work together to create the Fair Isle colorwork design. Quantities vary by size, ranging from 6 to 12 balls depending on the finished garment size selected.
Needles required include one pair of size 4 (3.5mm) needles, one pair of size 4½ (3.75mm) needles, one circular needle size 4 (3.5mm) in lengths of 80-160 cm depending on size, and one circular needle size 4½ (3.75mm) in corresponding lengths. The pattern uses smaller needles for ribbing or edging and larger needles for the main body.
The gauge is 22 stitches and 24 rows over 10 centimeters (4 inches) when worked in the Fair Isle patterned stitch. Achieving correct gauge is essential for proper fit, as the dress is sized across nine different measurements.
Pattern Structure and Construction Notes
The dress is worked in the round from the bottom up. The Fair Isle charted grid (Grid A) is repeated throughout the body, with stitches from the grid worked twice per round – once for the front and once for the back. After establishing the pattern, the knitter works straight sections, then introduces waist shaping decreases at regular intervals. The pattern includes multiple decrease rounds spaced 32 rows apart, repeated four times to create a pronounced fitted waist. The construction method and stitch counts are carefully calibrated to ensure the colorwork pattern aligns properly with the shaping decreases across all nine size options.
