Rowan 09 Scarf by Quail Studio

What is Being Made

The Rowan 09 Scarf is a classic knitted accessory designed as a long, narrow wrap. This finished scarf measures 16 cm (6¼ inches) wide and an impressive 240 cm (94½ inches) long, making it a versatile piece suitable for various styling options. The pattern offers flexibility in finishing, with the option to add decorative tassels at both ends or keep the scarf plain, depending on personal preference.

Techniques Used

This scarf is constructed using fundamental knitting techniques that make it accessible for beginners. The garment is worked flat on straight needles in a bottom-up construction method, meaning knitting begins at the cast-on edge and progresses toward the final cast-off edge. The seamless design eliminates the need for seaming, as the entire scarf is created as one continuous piece. The pattern begins with a knit row and continues in stockinette stitch throughout the entire length, providing a smooth, classic fabric texture.

Stitches Used

The primary stitch throughout this design is stockinette stitch (st st), which creates the characteristic smooth V-pattern on the right side of the fabric. This fundamental stitch is achieved by alternating knit rows on the right side with purl rows on the wrong side. The simplicity of stockinette stitch makes this pattern ideal for knitters developing their foundational skills, while the extended length provides ample practice with consistent tension and rhythm.

Materials and Specifications

  • Yarn: Rowan Soft Bouclé in either Ash 603 or Snow 600. The pattern requires 3 x 50gm balls if making the scarf with tassels, or 2 x 50gm balls for the plain version without tassels.
  • Needles: 1 pair of 6mm (UK size 4 / US size 10) needles for the main scarf construction. A large crochet hook is needed for attaching tassels to the cast-on and cast-off edges.
  • Tension: 12.5 stitches and 17 rows measured over 10 cm (4 inches) in stockinette stitch using 6mm needles. Achieving correct tension is essential for obtaining the specified finished dimensions.

Pattern Overview

The construction process is straightforward: cast on 20 stitches loosely using 6mm needles, then work in stockinette stitch until the scarf reaches the full 240 cm length, ending with the right side facing for the next row. Cast off loosely to maintain elasticity at the edges. For the tassel finish option, the pattern instructs knitters to create 16 tassels total (8 for each end) using 8 lengths of yarn measuring 40 cm each per tassel, then attach them securely using a large crochet hook. The pattern is classified as Skill Level 1, making it an excellent choice for beginners or those seeking a meditative, straightforward knitting project.
