Rowan Snuggle Knitted Leggings by Erika Knight

What Is Being Made

The Rowan Snuggle is a pair of knitted leggings designed for babies aged 0-3, 3-6, 6-9, and 9-12 months. These are pull-on leggings worked in the round from the upper edge downwards, featuring a comfortable waistband with elastic and shaped leg openings. The garment is sized to fit actual waist measurements ranging from 55 cm to 60 cm (21¾ to 23½ inches).

Techniques Used

The leggings are constructed using circular knitting techniques, worked seamlessly in the round using a circular needle for the main body. The pattern employs top-down construction, beginning at the upper edge and progressing downward to the leg openings. Key shaping techniques include:

  • Decreasing stitches using K2tog tbl (knit two together through back loop) and K2tog (knit two together) to create tapered leg shaping
  • Transitioning from circular needles to double-pointed needles for the narrower leg sections
  • Grafting or casting off crotch seam stitches together with wrong sides held together to create a decorative ridge on the right side of the finished garment
  • Elastic insertion at the waistband for secure fit

Stitches Used

The Rowan Snuggle uses fundamental knitting stitches appropriate for an intermediate skill level:

  • Stockinette stitch (st st) – the primary fabric throughout the leggings, creating a smooth, classic knit appearance
  • Ribbing – worked at the upper waistband edge and at the leg openings for elasticity and a finished appearance
  • Decreases – K2tog tbl and K2tog stitches strategically placed to shape the legs

Materials

The Rowan Snuggle is designed to be knitted with Rowan Baby Cashsoft Merino yarn, a luxury fiber blend ideal for delicate baby garments. The pattern requires 2 to 3 balls of 50-gram weight depending on the size being made (photographed in the colorway Pickles 123). The needles required include a 3½mm (UK 10/9, US 4) circular needle no longer than 40 cm for the main body and sets of 4 double-pointed 3½mm (UK 10/9, US 4) needles for working the leg sections. Additionally, a set of 4 double-pointed 3¼mm (UK 10, US 3) needles is needed for the ribbed leg cuffs. The pattern also calls for 2.5 cm (1 inch) wide elastic cut to fit around the waist for secure fastening.

Tension and Fit

The pattern is worked to a tension of 23 stitches and 30 rounds to 10 cm measured over stockinette stitch using 3½mm (US 4) needles. Achieving correct tension is essential for proper garment sizing in this intermediate-level project.
