Rowan Eggplant Cape by Lisa Richardson
What is Being Made
The Eggplant is a knitted cape designed to fit bust measurements of 81-91 cm (32-36 in), 97-107 cm (38-42 in), or 112-127 cm (44-50 in). This garment is worked in one piece beginning at the neck edge and features a circular construction that expands outward. The finished hem measurement spans 145.5 cm (57¼ in), 162 cm (63¾ in), or 174.5 cm (68¾ in) depending on size, creating a dramatic, flowing silhouette characteristic of cape designs.
Techniques Used
This intermediate-level knitting project employs circular knitting techniques throughout, requiring the crafter to work in continuous rounds rather than flat rows. The construction begins with a ribbed neckband that is worked in the round, then transitions to stockinette stitch as the primary fabric. The pattern incorporates strategic increases distributed evenly around the garment using yarn forward (yfwd) techniques to create the expanding circular shape. Decreases are also strategically placed using slip stitch, knit, pass slipped stitch over (sl 1, K1, psso) and knit two together (K2tog) methods to create decorative lace-like details and shaping within the expanding cape structure.
Stitches Used
- Ribbing: Knit 2, Purl 2 (K2, P2) rib worked at the neckband
- Stockinette Stitch: Knit stitch in the round (st st) forms the primary fabric
- Yarn Forward: Yfwd increases create eyelet details and shaping
- Decreases: Slip stitch, knit, pass slipped stitch over (sl 1, K1, psso) and knit two together (K2tog) worked in combination with yarn forwards for decorative patterning
Materials
The Eggplant cape requires Rowan Denim Revive yarn in quantities of 10, 11, or 12 balls of 50 gm depending on the size selected (photographed in the Silt 216 colorway). Two 3¾mm (US 5) circular needles are required: one shorter needle no more than 40 cm in length for working the initial cast-on and neckband, and one longer 80 cm needle for working the expanding body of the cape in the round. The pattern is designed to achieve a tension of 22 stitches and 29 rows to 10 cm when measured over stockinette stitch using the 3¾mm circular needle.
