Product Description

Rowan Powder from Mode at Rowan: Collection 4 is a light and airy hooded women’s pullover knit in Cotton Glacé. The sweater features a crewneck, drop-shoulder sleeves, a hood, and an elegant all-over eyelet lace pattern. This boxy cropped oversize sweater is knit flat in pieces from the bottom up and then seamed. An I-cord drawstring finishes this lovely piece. Rowan Cotton Glacé is a 100% combed cotton yarn in a DK weight. Cotton Glacé comes in a beautiful, wide range of solid colors and has a slight luster. It's machine-washable and is a fantastic yarn for warmer weather garments. The lace patterns are in chart form only.

Rowan Powder Knitted Sweater

What is Being Made

Rowan Powder is an intermediate-level knitted sweater designed to fit bust measurements from 81-86 cm up to 122-127 cm, with corresponding garment bust measurements ranging from 112 cm to 152 cm. This pullover-style jumper features a classic construction with separate back and front pieces that are shaped at the shoulders and neckline.

Knitting Techniques Used

This pattern employs several essential knitting techniques appropriate for intermediate crafters. The sweater uses chart-based stitch patterning, requiring knitters to follow a repeating pattern from rows 29 to 46 throughout the body. The construction involves shaping through strategic cast-offs at the shoulders, creating a fitted garment silhouette. Neck shaping is achieved through decreasing stitches at the neck edge over multiple rows, with careful attention required to maintain pattern continuity during these decreases. The pattern note emphasizes that each decrease must be matched by an increase to maintain stitch count within the patterned sections, with stockinette stitch used at the beginning and end of rows where there are insufficient stitches to complete the pattern repeat.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The primary stitch structure combines stockinette stitch (knit and purl) with a charted stitch pattern that repeats throughout the body. The pattern uses knit stitches (K) and purl stitches (P) as indicated in the row instructions. Shaping is accomplished through casting off stitches at strategic points to create shoulder and neckline definition. The pattern requires careful attention to decreasing and increasing stitches within the patterned sections to maintain the integrity of the stitch pattern while shaping the garment.

Materials Required

  • Yarn: Rowan Cotton Glace, 14-15 x 50g balls (photographed in Bleached 726)
  • Needles: 1 pair 2¾mm (US 2) needles, 1 pair 3¼mm (US 3) needles, and 2 double-pointed 2¾mm (US 2) needles
  • Tension: 23 stitches and 34 rows to 10 cm (4 inches) measured over pattern using 3¼mm (US 3) needles

Pattern Overview

The Rowan Powder sweater follows a traditional two-piece construction method. The back piece is cast on using the smaller 2¾mm needles and worked upward with the charted stitch pattern, continuing straight until the specified length is reached before shoulder shaping begins. The front piece is worked in the same manner as the back but reaches the shoulder shaping point 8 to 12 rows later, depending on size, allowing for a deeper front neckline. Both pieces require careful management of pattern repeats and decreases to achieve the finished dimensions while maintaining the visual integrity of the stitch pattern throughout.
