Rowan Rocket Knitted Wrap by Lisa Richardson
What is Being Made
The Rowan Rocket is a rectangular knitted wrap designed as an intermediate-level project. The completed wrap measures 65.5 cm (25¾ inches) wide and 200 cm (78¾ inches) long, making it a generous accessory suitable for draping and layering. This downloadable PDF pattern is from Rowan's collection and features the design work of Lisa Richardson.
Techniques Used
This wrap employs several fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for intermediate crafters. The pattern begins with a loose cast-on edge and incorporates garter stitch as a border element at both the beginning and end of the project. The main body of the wrap features a repeating pattern that utilizes yarn forward increases and knit two together decreases to create an openwork design. A notable technique detail involves working double yarn forwards, where the pattern note specifies that "(yfwd) twice" counts as a single stitch, with the crafter dropping the second loop on the following row. This creates decorative eyelets and a lacy texture throughout the wrap.
Stitches Used
- Garter stitch (g st): Used for the border rows at the beginning and end of the wrap to create a finished edge
- Knit stitch (K): The primary stitch forming the base fabric
- Yarn forward (yfwd): Worked twice in sequence to create decorative increases and eyelet details
- Knit two together (K2tog): A decrease stitch that pairs with the yarn forwards to maintain stitch count and create the lacy pattern repeat
- Knit into double yarn forward: A specialized technique where the crafter knits into a double yarn forward once only, dropping the second loop to complete the eyelet formation
Pattern Structure
The wrap is constructed using a six-row pattern repeat that forms the main design. After working two rows of garter stitch, the crafter casts on 118 stitches and begins a setup row, then works the six-row pattern sequence repeatedly until the wrap reaches approximately 199.5 cm in length. The pattern concludes with two additional rows of garter stitch before casting off loosely knitwise to maintain a soft, finished edge.
Materials
Yarn: Rowan Creative Linen, 6 x 100 gram balls (photographed in colorway Apple 629). This linen yarn provides a lightweight, breathable quality suitable for a wrap that drapes elegantly.
Needles: One pair of 4½mm (US 7) needles for working the entire project.
Tension: 18 stitches and 25 rows measured over 10 cm using 4½mm (US 7) needles in pattern. Achieving correct tension is essential for obtaining the finished dimensions and proper drape of the completed wrap.
Finishing
The wrap requires blocking and pressing according to the instructions provided on the yarn ball band. The pattern recommends pressing all pieces while omitting ribs, and special care should be taken during the pressing process to maintain the integrity of the knitted fabric.
