Rowan Aida Baby Hat by Grace Jones

What Is Being Made

The Rowan Aida is a knitted baby hat designed for infants ranging from newborn through 3 years of age. This classic hat features a fitted crown shape that tapers to a gathered top, making it suitable for multiple size ranges: 0-3 months, 3-6 months, 6-9 months, 9-12 months, 12-18 months, and 2-3 years. The finished hat circumferences range from 34 cm (13½ inches) for the smallest size to 48.5 cm (19 inches) for the largest size, ensuring a comfortable fit across the intended age range.

Techniques Used

This pattern employs several fundamental knitting techniques to construct the hat:

  • Bottom-up construction: The hat is worked from the bottom edge upward toward the crown, allowing knitters to easily adjust length if needed.
  • Worked flat: Rather than working in the round, this hat is knitted flat on straight needles, creating two separate pieces that are later joined.
  • Striped colorwork: The design incorporates horizontal stripes using two contrasting colors from the Rowan Baby Cashsoft Merino yarn range, creating visual interest and texture.
  • Seamed construction: After the flat pieces are completed, they are joined using back stitch or mattress stitch seaming techniques, with the seam reversed for the first 6 rows to create a neat finish at the hat brim.
  • Crown shaping: Decreases are strategically placed throughout the crown section to create the tapered shape, using K2tog (knit two together) decreases worked at regular intervals across multiple rows.

Stitches Used

The Rowan Aida utilizes basic stockinette stitch as the foundation fabric, combined with strategic decrease stitches to shape the crown. The primary stitch techniques include:

  • Stockinette stitch (st st): The main fabric stitch, created by alternating knit rows on the right side with purl rows on the wrong side, producing the classic smooth, V-patterned surface ideal for displaying the striped colorwork.
  • Knit two together (K2tog): A right-leaning decrease stitch used repeatedly throughout the crown shaping rows to systematically reduce stitch counts and create the gathered top of the hat.
  • Knit stitch (K): The fundamental stitch used throughout the pattern for creating the fabric and maintaining stitch definition between decreases.

Materials

The Rowan Aida is designed to be worked with specific materials that ensure softness and comfort for delicate baby skin:

  • Yarn: Rowan Baby Cashsoft Merino, a premium blend yarn available in two colors for this pattern. Color A (Cream, shade 102) and Color B (Vintage Pink, shade 105) are used in quantities ranging from 1 x 50gm to 2 x 50gm depending on the size being knitted, allowing for the horizontal striped design.
  • Needles: The pattern requires two sizes of needles to accommodate the tension requirements. A pair of 3mm (US 2/3) needles and a pair of 3¼mm (US 3) needles are used for the main fabric, with the larger needles used for the striped stockinette stitch sections. Additionally, two double-pointed 3mm (US 2/3) needles are included for any necessary finishing work.

Pattern Details

The Rowan Aida pattern is graded across seven size options to accommodate the growth stages of infants and toddlers. The crown shaping involves a series of decreases worked at specific intervals, with stitch counts progressively reduced from the initial cast-on through multiple decrease rows until the remaining stitches are gathered and fastened off at the top. The tension is specified as 25 stitches and 34 rows to 10 centimeters measured over striped stockinette stitch using the 3¼mm needles, ensuring proper fit and fabric drape. The pattern reference is ZB247-00001 v.1 and is authored by Grace Jones, published by MEZ Crafts UK Ltd. in 2019.
