What is Being Made

The Rowan Amure is a knitted sweater designed by Sarah Hatton, available in five sizes to fit bust measurements from 81–86 cm (32–34 inches) up to 122–127 cm (48–50 inches). The finished garment features an actual bust measurement ranging from 104 cm (41 inches) in the smallest size to 144 cm (57 inches) in the largest size. This is a classic pullover-style sweater suitable for various occasions and body types.

Knitting Techniques Used

The Amure sweater is constructed using bottom-up knitting, meaning the garment is worked from the lower edge upward. The pattern is worked flat on straight needles rather than in the round, requiring seaming to finish the garment. Lace is a prominent design feature, incorporated into the pattern through decorative yarn-over and decrease sequences that create openwork details. The lace panels are strategically placed to add visual interest and texture to the sweater's construction.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The sweater employs a combination of fundamental and decorative stitches. Stockinette stitch forms the main fabric base, providing a smooth, classic appearance. The pattern incorporates ribbing (alternating knit and purl stitches) at the edges and cuffs for elasticity and a finished look. Lace elements are created using yarn-overs (yfwd, yrn, yon) paired with decreases such as slip 2, knit 1, pass slipped stitches over (sl 2, K1, p2sso) and knit 2 together (K2tog). The pattern also features twisted stitches (K1 tbl, indicating knit through the back loop), which add subtle texture and refinement to the design. The lace pattern panel measures 20.5 cm and consists of 49 stitches.

Materials: Yarn and Needles

The Rowan Amure is worked in Cotton Cashmere yarn by Rowan. Yardage requirements vary by size: the smallest size requires 7 x 50-gram balls, the next two sizes require 8 x 50-gram balls, followed by 9 x 50-gram balls for the fourth size, and 10 x 50-gram balls for the largest size. Two pairs of needles are required: 3¼mm (US 3) needles for the ribbed edgings and initial cast-on, and 4mm (US 6) needles for the main body of the sweater. The pattern is designed to achieve a tension of 20 stitches and 28 rows to 10 centimeters measured over stockinette stitch using the 4mm needles.

Pattern Structure

The pattern begins with casting on stitches on the smaller needles, establishing a ribbed edge with a combination of knit and purl stitches. After working the ribbed section, the knitter changes to the larger needles and transitions into the main lace pattern. The front panel features lace motifs worked symmetrically, with stockinette stitch sections flanking the decorative lace panels.
