What is Being Made

Rowan Arram is a knitted sweater designed by Martin Storey, available in five sizes ranging from small to extra-extra-large to fit bust measurements of 81–127 cm (32–50 inches). This is a classic pullover-style jumper featuring a structured silhouette with shaping at the waist and neckline, designed for a refined, fitted appearance.

Knitting Techniques

This sweater is constructed using bottom-up seamed construction, meaning the back and front panels are knitted separately from the lower edge upward, then joined together with seams. The garment is worked flat on straight needles rather than in the round, allowing for precise shaping and stitch manipulation across the body and sleeves. The design incorporates waist shaping through strategic decreasing and increasing, creating a tapered silhouette. The front features pocket openings that are worked into the main fabric, with stitches held on stitch holders during construction and later rejoined. Neck shaping is achieved by working each shoulder separately after dividing the neckline stitches, with decreases worked at the neck edge to create a smooth, fitted neckline.

Stitches Used

• Ribbed knit: The sweater begins with a 2×2 rib pattern (knit 2, purl 2) at the lower edge, worked over approximately 8 cm. This elastic ribbing helps the garment sit close to the body and provides structural integrity.
• Stockinette stitch: The main body fabric is worked in a patterned stitch, with tension measured at 19 stitches and 28 rows over 10 cm on the larger needles, indicating a smooth, classic knit fabric suitable for everyday wear.
• Decreases and increases: Strategic shaping is achieved through single-stitch decreases at the waist and underarm, worked on alternating rows and fourth rows to create gradual, professional shaping.

Materials and Tools

Rowan Arram is designed to be worked in Rowan Super Fine Merino Aran yarn, a premium blend that provides excellent drape and durability. The pattern requires 14, 16, 18, 20, or 22 balls of 50-gram weight yarn depending on the size selected (photographed in the colorway Ocean 005). Two pairs of needles are required: 4mm (US 6) needles for the ribbed cuffs and initial cast-on, and 4½mm (US 7) needles for the main body fabric. Additional notions include stitch holders for managing stitches during pocket and neckline construction, and standard seaming supplies for finishing the garment.
