Rowan Bondi Cardigan by Martin Storey

What is Being Made

The Rowan Bondi Cardigan is a classic knitted cardigan designed by Martin Storey. This garment is worked as a button-front cardigan available in five sizes to fit bust measurements ranging from 81–86 cm (32–34 in) through to 122–127 cm (48–50 in), with corresponding finished bust measurements from 95.5 cm (37½ in) to 135.5 cm (53¼ in). The cardigan features a structured silhouette with shaped armholes and shoulders, and is finished with six shell buttons measuring 20mm.

Knitting Techniques

The Bondi Cardigan is constructed using bottom-up seamed construction, meaning the pieces are knitted individually from the lower edges upward and then sewn together. The garment is worked flat on straight needles rather than in the round, allowing for traditional seaming at side and sleeve edges. This method provides excellent stitch definition and creates clean, professional seams typical of tailored cardigan designs.

Key shaping techniques employed throughout the pattern include strategic decreases at armhole edges to create fitted armholes, and structured shoulder shaping achieved through successive cast-off rows. The pattern uses both standard decreases (P2tog and P2tog tbl) and cast-off shaping to achieve the garment's refined proportions.

Stitches Used

The Bondi Cardigan primarily features stockinette stitch (st st) as the main fabric, which creates a smooth, classic knit surface. The lower edge of the cardigan begins with a ribbed cuff worked in a K2, P2 rib pattern, which provides elasticity and helps the garment sit neatly at the hem. This ribbed section is worked for 18 rows total before transitioning to stockinette stitch, with strategic decreases worked evenly across the final rib row to refine the fit.

Materials and Specifications

The cardigan is knitted using Rowan Denim Revive yarn, with the photographed sample worked in the colorway Lipstick 214. The pattern requires 13, 14, 15, 16, or 18 balls of 50gm yarn depending on the size selected.

The pattern calls for the following needles:

  • 1 pair of 3¼mm (US 3) needles for ribbed sections
  • 1 pair of 3¾mm (US 5) needles for main stockinette stitch fabric
  • 2 double-pointed 3¼mm (US 3) needles for finishing details

The recommended tension is 22 stitches and 29 rows to 10 cm measured over stockinette stitch using 3¾mm (US 5) needles. Achieving correct tension is essential for obtaining the intended finished measurements and garment proportions.

The cardigan is fastened with 6 shell buttons measuring 20mm, which provide both functional closure and decorative detail along the front opening.
