Product Description
Rowan Cool Weave Knitted Wrap by Kaffe Fassett
What is Being Made
The Rowan Cool Weave is a large rectangular knitted wrap designed as a throw or shawl. The finished wrap measures approximately 43 cm (17 inches) wide and 222 cm (87 inches) long, making it a substantial accessory suitable for draping over shoulders or displaying as a decorative throw.
Knitting Techniques
This pattern employs the intarsia technique, a color-work method that allows for large blocks of contrasting colors to be incorporated into the knitted fabric without carrying yarn across the back. The wrap is worked flat on straight needles rather than in the round, and is constructed bottom-up, beginning with a cast-on edge and progressing upward to the final cast-off edge.
The intarsia technique requires careful color changes as specified in the chart pattern. Knitters must break off and join in new colors as required, following the chart rows precisely to create the intended design. The pattern is worked entirely in stockinette stitch (st st), beginning with a knit row, which creates a smooth, classic fabric with a distinct right and wrong side.
Stitches Used
- Stockinette Stitch (st st) – The primary stitch throughout the wrap body, created by alternating knit and purl rows
- Double Crochet (dc) – Used for the edging applied after the main knitting is complete
- Slip Stitch (ss) – Used to join rounds and finish off the crocheted edging
- Chain Stitch (ch) – Used at the beginning of the crochet edging rounds
Pattern Structure and Repeat
The wrap pattern is based on a charted design that is repeated multiple times. Knitters work chart rows 1 through 180 a total of three times, then work rows 1 through 120 once more. This repetition creates a cohesive, patterned fabric across the entire length of the wrap. The pattern begins and ends rows as indicated on the chart to ensure proper shaping and alignment of the intarsia design.
Edging and Finishing
After the main knitted body is complete, a crochet edging is added to the outer edge of the wrap. Using a 3.50mm (US E4) crochet hook and yarn A (Billberry), a round of double crochet stitches is worked around the entire perimeter. The edging is worked with 3 double crochets into each corner point to maintain shaping, 1 double crochet into each stitch, and 2 double crochets for every 3 rows along the sides. A second round of double crochet follows the same pattern. The wrap also features a fabric backing measuring 226 cm by 47 cm, which is pressed and stitched to the wrong side of the knitted wrap with folded raw edges for a finished appearance.
Yarn and Materials
The Rowan Cool Weave is knitted using Rowan Felted Tweed yarn, a wool-based yarn that provides structure and drape suitable for a large wrap project. The pattern calls for nine coordinated colors:

- Yarn B – Amethyst 192 (1 x 50gm)
- Yarn C – Seafarer 170 (2 x 50gm)
- Yarn D – Pine 158 (1 x 50gm)
- Yarn E – Ancient 172 (1 x 50gm)
- Yarn F – Watery 152 (2 x 50gm)
