Rowan Cooper Knitted Sweater by Martin Storey
What is Being Made
The Rowan Cooper is a knitted sweater designed by Martin Storey. This garment is worked as a classic pullover jumper with raglan armhole shaping and a crew neckline. The pattern is available in six sizes to fit chest measurements ranging from 81-86 cm (32-34 inches) up to 132-137 cm (52-54 inches), with corresponding finished chest measurements from 91 cm to 143 cm.
Construction Technique
This sweater is constructed using a bottom-up, seamed, and worked-flat method. The garment pieces—back, front, and sleeves—are knitted separately in flat rows on straight needles, then assembled together with seams. The raglan armhole shaping is integrated into the pattern pieces, creating a fitted silhouette that tapers toward the shoulders. The front features a shaped crew neckline with careful decreasing to create a neat finish.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The Cooper features a textured slip-stitch pattern that adds visual interest and depth to the fabric. The pattern uses the following key stitches and techniques:
- Knit and purl stitches as the foundation of the fabric
- Slip stitches (sl 1P wyaf) worked purlwise with yarn at front, creating a distinctive slip-stitch texture throughout
- Decreases including single decreases (K1, psso and K2tog) and double decreases (sl 1, K2tog, psso) for shaping the raglan armholes and neckline
- Stocking stitch as the base fabric structure
The slip-stitch pattern is worked in a four-stitch repeat (sl 1P wyaf, K3), creating a subtle all-over texture. Tension is critical for this design: the pattern specifies 20 stitches and 30 rows to 10 cm measured over the patterned fabric using 5mm needles.
Materials: Yarn and Needles
The Rowan Cooper is designed to be worked in Rowan Felted Tweed Aran, a worsted-weight yarn. The pattern requires 13 to 21 balls of 50-gram yarn depending on the size being knitted. The photographed sample is shown in the colorway Scree 765.
Two pairs of needles are required:
- 4mm (US 6) needles for ribbing and edge work
- 5mm (US 8) needles for the main fabric, where the tension is measured and the slip-stitch pattern is worked
The pattern is a downloadable PDF document (reference ZB220-00003 v.1) published by Rowan/MEZ Crafts UK Ltd. Additional pattern information and yarn details are available on knitrowan.com.
