Rowan Emoji Waistcoats by Martin Storey

What is Being Made

The Rowan Emoji pattern creates children's waistcoats designed to fit ages 3-4, 5-6, 7-8, 9-10, and 11-12 years. These knitted garments feature decorative emoji motifs worked into the front, making them playful and engaging pieces for young wearers. The waistcoats are worked from the bottom up in a flat knitting construction, allowing for straightforward shaping and customization across multiple size options.

Techniques Used

This pattern employs several key knitting techniques to achieve its finished design. The primary construction method is bottom-up knitting, where the garment is worked starting from the lower edge and progressing upward toward the shoulders and neckline. The signature feature of these waistcoats is the use of intarsia, a color-work technique that allows for the integration of detailed motifs—in this case, emoji designs—directly into the fabric. The intarsia motif is worked entirely in stockinette stitch and is positioned on the front of the waistcoat, creating a focal point. The pattern is worked flat on straight needles rather than in the round, meaning pieces are knitted as individual flat sections and later seamed together. This flat construction makes it easier to manage the intarsia color work and shaping.

Stitches Used

The waistcoats are primarily constructed using stockinette stitch (abbreviated st st in the pattern), which creates the smooth, classic knit fabric that forms the base of the garment. Stockinette stitch is created by alternating knit rows on the right side with purl rows on the wrong side. The intarsia motif is also worked in stockinette stitch, allowing the emoji design to integrate seamlessly with the background fabric while standing out through color contrast. The pattern includes standard shaping techniques such as casting off stitches at strategic points to create armholes and shape the shoulders and back neckline, ensuring proper fit across the range of child sizes.

Materials: Yarn and Needles

The Rowan Emoji waistcoats are designed to be knitted with Softyak DK, a double-knit weight yarn that provides excellent drape and softness suitable for children's garments.

Two Colour Version yarn requirements:

  • Yarn A (Terrain 243): 2, 2, 3, 3, 3 x 50g balls across the five size options
  • Yarn B (Pampas 235): 1, 1, 1, 1, 1 x 50g ball across all sizes

One Colour Version yarn requirements:

  • Softyak DK (photographed in Terrain 243): 2, 3, 3, 4, 4 x 50g balls across the five size options

The pattern calls for two needle sizes to achieve proper gauge and fabric consistency. 3¼mm (UK size 10 / US size 3) needles are used for ribbed edgings and cuffs, which create elasticity and help the garment hold its shape. 4mm (UK size 8 / US size 6) needles are used for the main body of the waistcoat worked in stockinette stitch. The recommended tension is 22 stitches and 30 rows to 10 centimeters measured over stockinette stitch using the 4mm needles, ensuring consistent sizing across all five age ranges.
