Product Description
Rowan Fir Cafetiere Cosy
What is Being Made
The Rowan Fir Cafetiere Cosy is a knitted decorative cover designed to fit a classic 8-cup cafetiere. This project combines functional insulation with decorative appeal, featuring a structured main section with side borders and decorative button loop closures. The cosy protects the cafetiere while adding a handmade, artisanal touch to kitchen décor.
Craft and Techniques
This is a knitting project classified at advanced skill level. The construction involves multiple interconnected techniques working together to create a professional-finished garment. The main section is worked flat in stockinette stitch with ribbed edging, while side borders are picked up and worked perpendicular to the main piece. Button loops are created using an i-cord technique on double-pointed needles, requiring the knitter to manipulate stitches and tension in a specific way to achieve the proper structure. The finishing process includes pressing and careful placement of button loops and wooden buttons to create a secure, attractive closure system.
Stitches Used
- Ribbed stitch – Used for the cast-on edge, cast-off edge, and side borders, creating vertical lines of texture and elasticity
- Stockinette stitch – The main patterned stitch used for the central section, providing a smooth, classic fabric base
- I-cord – Employed for the button loops, created by repeatedly slipping stitches and knitting them on double-pointed needles to form a narrow cord
Materials
This project uses Rowan Felted Tweed yarn in three colorways: Clay (shade 177), Phantom (shade 153), and French Mustard (shade 216), with one 50-gram ball of each color. Needles required include one pair of 3¼mm (US 3) needles and one pair of 3¾mm (US 5) needles, plus two double-pointed 3¼mm (US 3) needles for the i-cord button loops. The project is completed with three 27mm olive wood buttons from Textile Garden (TGB4920), which provide both functional closure and decorative detail. The tension is worked at 25 stitches and 27 rows to 10 centimeters over patterned stockinette stitch using the 3¾mm needles.
