Product Description

Rowan Halycon is a short-sleeved women’s pullover featuring a delicate all-over lace pattern, A-line shaping, and a reversible design for either a v-neck or crew neck look. This sweater is knit in the round to the armholes and seamed at the shoulders. Cashmere Haze is a luxurious blend of alpaca, cashmere, and silk that has a delectably soft halo. That softness paired with the strength of silk produces a gorgeous, lightweight fabric, creating a stylish layering piece that you can wear over camisoles or dresses to add warmth and elegance. The lace pattern is written only.

Rowan Halcyon Knitted Sweater by Lisa Richardson

What is Being Made

Rowan Halcyon is a knitted sweater designed by Lisa Richardson, available in five sizes to fit bust measurements from 81-86 cm (32-34 inches) up to 122-127 cm (48-50 inches). The finished garment features actual bust measurements ranging from 92.5 cm (36½ inches) to 132.5 cm (52¼ inches), offering a comfortable fit across multiple sizing options.

Knitting Techniques

This sweater is constructed using a combination of knitting techniques that create visual interest and texture throughout the garment. The design employs bottom-up construction, meaning the sweater is knitted starting from the lower edge and working upward. The pattern utilizes worked-in-the-round knitting on circular needles for seamless construction in certain sections, combined with worked-flat techniques where appropriate. Seaming is incorporated to join specific sections of the garment together. Lace patterning is a defining feature, creating decorative eyelet details throughout the design.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The Halcyon pattern features a sophisticated combination of stitch techniques. The design incorporates stockinette stitch (st st) in outlined sections, with eyelet holes created on every fourth round using yarn forward (yfwd) decreases. The lace patterning is achieved through a 12-round repeat that alternates between sections of stockinette stitch with eyelet details and more complex lace motifs. Key decreasing techniques include slip 1, knit 1, pass slipped stitch over (sl 1, K1, psso), knit 2 together (K2tog), and knit 3 together (K3tog), which are used both for shaping the garment and creating the decorative lace effects. Yarn forward increases (yfwd) work in conjunction with these decreases to form the characteristic eyelet and lace patterns. The pattern maintains two sections of 30 stitches of stockinette stitch outlined with eyelet holes, alongside two sections of lace patterning, all divided and organized by stitch markers.

Materials: Yarn and Needles

Rowan Halcyon is designed to be knitted in Cashmere Haze yarn. The yardage requirements vary by size: the smallest sizes require 3 balls of 25-gram weight, while the largest size requires 4 balls of 25-gram weight. The pattern was photographed in the colorway Polar Night 703. Additional yarn information and substitution guidance is available on knitrowan.com.

The pattern calls for 3.25mm (UK size 10, US size 3) circular needles in two lengths: one needle no more than 80-120 cm long (depending on size) for working larger circumferences, and another needle no more than 30 cm long for working smaller sections. A 4mm (UK size 8, US size 6) circular needle no more than 80-120 cm long (depending on size) is also required, likely for ribbing or other sections of the garment. Circular needles are essential for the in-the-round construction method used in this design.

Pattern Structure and Design Details

The Halcyon pattern is organized around a 12-round repeat that creates the primary pattern sequence. The design incorporates strategic decreasing rounds worked every 5 rounds to shape the garment, with decreases positioned at the sides of the stockinette stitch panels. The pattern uses stitch markers extensively to organize the different pattern sections and maintain proper stitch placement throughout the construction. The interplay between solid stockinette sections with eyelet details and the more intricate lace sections creates a balanced, visually appealing design suitable for a range of skill levels.
