Product Description

Rowan Hushed is a must-have women’s pullover designed by Lisa Richardson that would look great on anyone knit in Island Blend. The hem border is knit in the round in one piece, and the left back, and front is worked while the right back and front stitches are held on a holder. Then work the right back and front. Sleeves are knit flat from the bottom up. The body center seams and sleeves are then seamed together. Rowan Island Blend is a lovely mix of Falkland fine Merino wool, baby alpaca, and silk. The wool and alpaca gives this yarn softness and warmth, and the silk adds a gorgeous sheen. Island Blend is an excellent choice for Hushed.

Rowan Hushed Knitted Sweater by Lisa Richardson

What is Being Made

Rowan Hushed is a knitted sweater designed by Lisa Richardson, available in five sizes to fit bust measurements from 81–127 cm (32–50 inches). The finished garment features actual bust measurements ranging from 120–160 cm (47¼–63 inches), offering a comfortable, relaxed fit. This pullover-style sweater is crafted as a cohesive piece combining lace patterning with classic sweater construction.

Techniques Used

This design employs several key knitting techniques to create its finished structure:

  • Bottom-up construction: The sweater is worked from the hem upward, beginning with a hem border worked on circular needles
  • Worked flat and in the round: The body is initially worked flat in pieces, then sections are joined and worked in the round where appropriate
  • Seamed construction: Pieces are seamed together to form the finished garment
  • Lace patterning: Decorative lace stitches are integrated throughout the design, adding visual interest and texture to the sweater
  • Shaping techniques: The pattern includes detailed armhole shaping, neck shaping, and shoulder decreases to create a well-fitted garment

Stitches Used

The pattern utilizes fundamental knitting stitches combined with lace techniques. Stockinette stitch forms the primary fabric base, providing a smooth, classic knit surface. Lace stitches are worked as part of the pattern repeat, creating openwork details throughout the design. The hem border is constructed using circular needle techniques, and shaping is achieved through strategic decreases at armholes, necklines, and shoulders. The pattern includes cast-off edges for finishing neck and shoulder sections.

Materials: Yarn and Needles

Rowan Hushed is designed to be worked using Rowan Island Blend yarn in the 50gm weight. The pattern requires 12–16 balls depending on size selection (photographed in Island Blend White 900). The recommended needle size is 4mm (US 6), with the pattern specifying one pair of 4mm needles for flat sections and a 4mm circular needle no longer than 120 cm for worked-in-the-round sections. The tension is set at 21 stitches and 28 rows to 10 cm when measured over stockinette stitch using 4mm needles, ensuring consistent sizing across all five garment sizes.
