What is Being Made

Rowan Jaime is a classic knitted sweater designed by Marie Wallin, available in five sizes ranging from small (81-86 cm bust) to extra-extra-large (122-127 cm bust). This is a versatile pullover garment suitable for a range of body measurements and proportions.

Techniques Used

This sweater is constructed using bottom-up knitting methodology, meaning pieces are worked from the hem upward. The garment is worked flat on straight needles rather than in the round, and pieces are seamed together to create the finished sweater. The construction includes strategic shaping techniques such as:

• Hem shaping using wrap-and-turn short rows to create a curved, fitted lower edge
• Side seam increases worked at regular intervals (every 36 rows) to shape the body
• Armhole shaping through strategic cast-offs and decreases
• Shoulder shaping with graduated cast-offs for proper fit

Stitches Used

The primary stitch structure is stockinette stitch (st st), which creates the smooth, classic appearance of the sweater body. The lower edge features ribbed knit (alternating knit and purl stitches in a 1x1 pattern), which provides elasticity and helps the hem sit securely against the body. Additional stitch techniques include knit two together decreases (work 2 tog) for shaping.

Materials

This pattern requires Pure Wool Worsted weight yarn in quantities varying by size: 8 skeins for sizes S and M, 9 skeins for size L, 10 skeins for size XL, and 11 skeins for size XXL. Each skein is 100 grams. The photographed version is shown in Forest 126, a Rowan colorway.

Needles required include one pair of 3¾mm (US 5) needles for the ribbed cuff, one pair of 4½mm (US 7) needles for the main body, and a set of four 4½mm (US 7) double-pointed needles for collar work. The recommended tension is 20 stitches and 25 rows to 10 centimeters measured over stockinette stitch using the 4½mm needles.

Pattern Structure

The back panel begins with a long-tail cast-on and ribbed edging, followed by stockinette stitch body with side increases creating a gently shaped silhouette. Armhole shaping occurs through multiple decrease rounds, and shoulders are shaped with graduated cast-offs. The front follows the same shaping as the back through the armhole, with additional hem edge shaping created through short-row wrapping. A collar is worked from stitches held on a stitch holder, completing the neckline finish.
