Rowan Knut Sweater by Arne & Carlos

What is Being Made

The Rowan Knut is a knitted sweater designed by the renowned design duo Arne & Carlos. This garment is a pullover-style jumper available in six size options to fit chest measurements ranging from 81-86 cm (32-34 inches) up to 132-137 cm (52-54 inches). The finished garment features actual chest measurements from 91 cm to 140 cm, offering a comfortable fit across multiple sizing categories.

Construction Method and Techniques

The Rowan Knut employs a bottom-up seamless construction worked entirely in the round, eliminating the need for seaming and creating a continuous, unified fabric. This modern knitting approach provides a smooth, professional finish and reduces finishing work.

The sweater features stranded colorwork throughout the design, incorporating multiple yarn colors to create patterned sections. The pattern utilizes five distinct colors from the Alpaca Soft DK yarn range: Marine Blue, Trench Coat, Simply White, Deep Rose, and Brick. The stranded technique involves carrying unused yarn colors inside the fabric while working with the active color, creating a dense, reversible textile ideal for colorwork garments.

Stitches and Shaping

The sweater begins with ribbed edging worked on 3¼mm (US 3) needles, which provides elasticity and structure at the lower edge. The body and sleeves transition to stockinette stitch (knit every round), the fundamental stitch for smooth, flat fabric in circular knitting.

Shaping is accomplished through strategic increases:

  • Sleeve shaping includes increases at each end of the sleeve on specific round intervals (every 5th or 6th round, depending on size), progressing to every 4th or 6th round, building from initial cast-on stitches to final sleeve cap stitches ranging from 74 to 96 stitches depending on size
  • Side shaping on the body creates a fitted silhouette through increases worked at regular intervals
  • Front neck shaping is incorporated to create the neckline opening

Underarm stitches are placed on holders during construction, allowing for seamless yoke integration where sleeve and body sections are joined.

Materials and Tools

The Rowan Knut is designed to be worked in Alpaca Soft DK yarn, a lightweight double-knit weight fiber. The yarn requirements vary by size, ranging from 2 to 13 balls of 50-gram weight depending on the specific color and garment size. Marine Blue (color A) serves as the primary color, used for ribbed sections and foundational elements, requiring 2 balls across all sizes. Trench Coat (color B) is the secondary color, requiring between 8 and 13 balls depending on size. Accent colors—Simply White, Deep Rose, and Brick—are used in smaller quantities (1-2 balls each) for stranded colorwork details.

The pattern requires 4mm (US 6) circular needles for the main fabric and 3¼mm (US 3) circular needles for ribbed edging. Circular needle lengths range from 90 to 140 cm depending on garment size to accommodate the increasing stitch counts. Additionally, 4mm (US 6) double-pointed needles are used for sleeve construction worked in the round. Stitch holders are necessary for managing stitches during underarm and yoke sections.

Pattern Details and Measurements

The pattern provides detailed instructions for six distinct sizes with comprehensive measurement guidance. Body length is consistent at approximately 35-36.5 cm from cast-on to front neck shaping, while sleeve length reaches 47-53 cm depending on size. Ribbed sections at the body and sleeve cuffs measure 6 cm and 4 cm respectively, providing structured edges that maintain elasticity through wear.
