Rowan Kyle Cowl by Lisa Richardson

What is Being Made

The Rowan Kyle Cowl is a circular cowl designed by Lisa Richardson, offering a versatile neckwear accessory that combines style with wearability. This downloadable knitting pattern produces a finished cowl measuring 148 cm (58¼ inches) in circumference and 15 cm (6 inches) deep, making it a generous, comfortable piece suitable for layering or wearing as a statement accessory.

Craft and Techniques

This project is executed in the knitting craft using in-the-round construction with a circular needle. The pattern demonstrates intermediate skill level difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with foundational experience who are ready to tackle more complex stitch patterns and color work.

The cowl features multi-color stranded knitting and slip stitch patterning, which creates visual texture and interest throughout the design. The construction begins with a lower border section worked in coordinated color changes, followed by an extended main pattern section that repeats and builds upon established stitch sequences. This methodical approach allows knitters to develop rhythm and consistency as they progress through the piece.

Stitches Used

The Kyle Cowl employs a limited but effective stitch vocabulary appropriate for intermediate knitters:

  • Knit stitch (K) – the foundational stitch used throughout
  • Purl stitch (P) – creates textural contrast and reversibility in sections
  • Slip stitch (sl 1) – a key decorative element that creates the distinctive pattern texture and allows for color transitions without adding bulk

The pattern alternates between knit and purl rounds in strategic sequences, with slip stitches positioned to create geometric patterns. The slip stitch technique is particularly valuable in this design as it produces a refined, tailored appearance while maintaining the fabric's drape and flexibility.

Materials

The pattern is worked using 4mm (US 6) circular needles no longer than 80 cm (32 inches), which is appropriately sized for in-the-round cowl construction.

Yarn requirements vary by colorway selection. The pattern offers three distinct colorway options, each using Rowan yarn in three coordinating shades:

  • First Colorway: Moss 907, Leather 903, and Blush 904 (1 x 50gm each)
  • Second Colorway: Routemaster 909, Empire 906, and White 900 (1 x 50gm each)
  • Third Colorway: Ash 901, Jet 902, and Lemon 908 (1 x 50gm each)

Total yardage required is 150 grams (three 50-gram balls) of Rowan yarn distributed across the three selected colors. This modest yardage makes the project economical and manageable for knitters working with premium fibers.

Tension and Finished Dimensions

The pattern is designed to be worked at a tension of 20 stitches and 44 rows to 10 cm (measured over pattern using 4mm needles). Achieving accurate tension is important for obtaining the intended finished dimensions and ensuring the cowl drapes properly when worn. The completed cowl provides substantial circumference and moderate depth, making it suitable for multiple styling options from a simple drape to a wrapped configuration.
