Rowan Mist Scarf

Project Overview

The Rowan Mist Scarf is a knitted accessory measuring 35cm/13¾in wide by 220cm/86½in long. This design combines textural interest with accessible construction, making it suitable for knitters with intermediate skills (Skill Level 2). The scarf features a striking bobble pattern that creates dimensional texture against smooth garter stitch sections.

Construction Method

This scarf is worked bottom-up in a seamless, flat construction. The knitter begins by casting on stitches and working the piece in one continuous piece from the cast-on edge to the final bind-off, eliminating the need for seaming. The flat working method means the scarf is worked back and forth on straight needles rather than in the round.

Stitch Techniques and Pattern Structure

The Rowan Mist Scarf employs several key knitting techniques:

  • Garter Stitch (g st): Forms the foundation of the scarf, creating a reversible, textured fabric with horizontal ridges. The scarf is worked in garter stitch for the majority of its length (180cm/70¾in from the cast-on edge).
  • Bobble Pattern: A decorative textural element created using the Make Bobble (MB) stitch. This special abbreviation involves knitting into the front, back, front, back, and front of a single stitch, then working a series of slip and knit movements to create a three-dimensional bobble effect. The bobble pattern is worked over 36 rows, creating 18 rows of visible bobbles.
  • Ribbing: A 10cm/4in section of knit-purl ribbing (K1, P1 rib) appears at both the beginning and end of the scarf, providing structure and elasticity at the edges.
  • Decreases: The scarf incorporates K2tog (knit two together) decreases to shape the final edge before the closing ribbed section.

Bobble Pattern Details

The bobble pattern is set over 4 rows and repeats throughout the scarf. On right-side rows, bobbles are worked at regular intervals (every 3 stitches), with the placement alternating between rows to create a balanced, staggered appearance. Wrong-side rows are worked in purl, allowing the bobbles to sit prominently on the right side of the fabric. This creates a sophisticated texture that catches light and adds visual interest to the finished scarf.

Materials Required

Yarn: Rowan Big Wool in the shade Prize 064 (or chosen colorway). The pattern requires 8 balls of 100g each, providing ample yardage for the full 220cm length.

Needles: 10mm (US 15) needles are used throughout the project for both the ribbed sections and the main body.

Tension and Gauge

Achieving proper tension is essential for this project. The pattern specifies two different gauges depending on the stitch being worked:

  • Garter stitch: 10 stitches and 16 rows to 10cm/4in using 10mm (US 15) needles
  • Bobble pattern: 13 stitches and 12 rows to 10cm/4in using 10mm (US 15) needles

The difference in gauge between garter stitch and bobble pattern is due to the dimensional nature of the bobbles, which compress the fabric slightly. Knitters should swatch both stitch patterns to ensure their tension matches the pattern specifications.

Finishing

The scarf is finished with a press to set the stitches and even out the fabric, following the general pressing guidelines provided in the pattern information pages. This finishing step helps the garter stitch and bobble pattern settle into their final appearance.
