Rowan Peace Waistcoat by Lisa Richardson
What is Being Made
The Rowan Peace is an intermediate-level knitted waistcoat designed by Lisa Richardson. This garment is available in five size options to fit bust measurements ranging from 81-86 cm (32-34 inches) up to 122-127 cm (48-50 inches), with actual finished bust measurements from 92 cm to 132 cm. The waistcoat features a structured construction with shaped back and front pieces, including tailored neck and shoulder shaping for a fitted silhouette.
Techniques Used
This intermediate knitting project employs several key shaping techniques essential to waistcoat construction. The pattern includes neck shaping worked over multiple rows with strategic decreases to create a refined neckline. Shoulder shaping is achieved through cast-off stitches at the beginning of rows, allowing the garment to fit properly across the shoulders. The pattern requires working each side of the neck separately after dividing stitches, a technique that allows independent shaping of left and right sides. Additionally, the pattern incorporates decreasing at regular intervals (including alternate rows and every fourth row) to achieve the front neck depth, demonstrating intermediate-level shaping complexity.
Stitches Used
The Rowan Peace utilizes a combination of fundamental knitting stitches to create its textured appearance. The pattern features knit stitches (K) and purl stitches (P) worked in a structured repeat pattern. The ribbed edging is created using alternating knit and purl stitches in a (K1, P1) repeat, which provides elasticity and a finished appearance to the garment edges. The main body employs a patterned stitch repeat, with the tension specification indicating the pattern is worked consistently throughout the piece at 22 stitches and 37 rows per 10 centimetres.
Materials
The Rowan Peace is knitted using Rowan Island Blend yarn, a 50-gram skein weight. Yarn quantities vary by size, ranging from 8 skeins for the smallest size to 12 skeins for the largest size (photographed in White 900). The project requires 4mm (US 6) knitting needles in two configurations: one pair of straight needles for the main garment pieces, and a 4mm circular needle no longer than 40 centimetres for collar and finishing work. The specified tension is 22 stitches and 37 rows to 10 centimetres when measured over pattern using 4mm needles, which is essential for achieving the correct finished garment dimensions.
