Rowan Stour Cardigan by Martin Storey

What is Being Made

The Rowan Stour is a classic knitted cardigan designed by Martin Storey. This garment is available in seven sizes ranging from XS to 2XL, with finished chest measurements from 38 inches (97 cm) to 50 inches (127 cm). The cardigan features a traditional button-front closure with four buttons and is constructed using a bottom-up, seamed approach with pieces worked flat on needles.

Construction Techniques

The Stour cardigan employs bottom-up construction, meaning the garment is knitted starting from the lower edges and working upward toward the shoulders. All pattern pieces—back, left front, and right front—are worked flat on straight needles rather than in the round, and the finished pieces are then seamed together. This traditional method allows for precise shaping and a professional finish.

The pattern includes strategic shaping techniques such as increases at side seams to create a fitted silhouette and armhole and shoulder shaping to ensure proper fit and garment structure. The neck shaping is worked by casting off center stitches and completing each shoulder separately to create a neat neckline.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The Stour cardigan features two primary stitch patterns:

  • Ribbed cuff and hem: A K2, P2 ribbing pattern worked over 24 rows using 5mm needles. This elastic ribbing provides a snug, finished edge that helps the garment retain its shape.
  • Stockinette stitch body: The main body of the cardigan is worked in stockinette stitch (knit on right-side rows, purl on wrong-side rows) using 6mm needles, creating a smooth, classic fabric suitable for everyday wear.

Materials: Yarn and Needles

The Rowan Stour is designed to be knitted with Rowan Brushed Fleece yarn in a worsted weight. The pattern requires between 6 and 10 balls of 50-gram yarn depending on the size being knitted, with the photographed sample shown in the colorway Moor 255.

The pattern calls for two pairs of needles: 5mm (US 8) needles for working the ribbed sections at the cuffs and hems, and 6mm (US 10) needles for the main stockinette stitch body. The recommended tension is 13 stitches and 19 rows to 10 centimeters measured over stockinette stitch using the 6mm needles, ensuring proper fit and drape.

The cardigan is finished with four BN1636 buttons from Bedecked, providing a classic closure system suitable for a traditional cardigan design.
