Product Description
Salthouse in Mode at Rowan Alpaca Wool & Alpaca Haze
What Is Being Made
The Salthouse is a seamless knitted top designed by Quail Studio. This intermediate-level garment is worked seamlessly from the hem upwards, creating a continuous piece without seams. The pattern offers nine size options ranging from 71-76 cm (28-30 inches) chest to 152-157 cm (60-62 inches) chest, with actual garment measurements from 91 cm to 172.5 cm across the bust.
Knitting Techniques
This seamless garment employs several fundamental knitting construction techniques:
- Seamless in-the-round construction: The body is primarily worked in continuous rounds using circular needles, eliminating the need for seaming
- Flat knitting sections: Shoulder shaping is accomplished by switching to flat knitting (working backwards and forwards in rows) rather than in-the-round
- Two-yarn held together: One strand each of Alpaca Wool and Alpaca Haze are held together throughout, creating a blended fabric
- Ribbed edging: The hem begins with knit-purl ribbing worked over 8 cm to create an elastic, fitted edge
- Decreasing for shaping: Shoulder shaping is created through strategic decreases at each end of rows
Stitches Used
The Salthouse utilizes classic, accessible stitches appropriate for an intermediate knitter:
- Stockinette stitch (st st): The primary stitch throughout the garment, creating a smooth, classic knit fabric
- Ribbing (K1, P1): Alternating knit and purl stitches form the elastic rib at the hem
Materials and Needles
The Salthouse is designed to be knitted using Mode at Rowan yarns in a two-yarn combination:
- Alpaca Wool (50g balls): Available in Olive 018 or Dove 014, with quantities ranging from 5 to 11 balls depending on size
- Alpaca Haze (25g balls): Available in Khaki 018 or Jasmine 014, with quantities ranging from 3 to 6 balls depending on size
Needle requirements include:
- One pair of 4mm (US 6) straight needles for flat knitting sections
- 3.75mm (US 5) circular needle, no more than 80-160 cm long depending on size, for ribbing
- 4mm (US 6) circular needle, no more than 80-160 cm long depending on size, for main body
- Set of 4 double-pointed 3.75mm (US 5) needles for smaller circumference sections
Tension and Gauge
The pattern requires a tension of 22 stitches and 32 rows per 10 cm measured over stockinette stitch using 4mm (US 6) needles with one strand each of Alpaca Wool and Alpaca Haze held together. Achieving correct gauge is essential for proper fit across the nine size options.
Additional Supplies
Beyond yarn and needles, knitters will need stitch holders to temporarily secure stitches during construction and a stitch marker to denote the beginning of rounds when working seamlessly in-the-round.
