Sand Cardigan in Rowan Summerlite DK

What is Being Made

The Sand Cardigan is a knitted cardigan designed by Quail Studios, available in nine different sizes to fit bust measurements ranging from 71–76 cm (28–30 inches) up to 152–147 cm (60–62 inches). This garment is a classic button-front cardigan with shaping at the armholes, front neckline, and shoulders, making it a versatile layering piece suitable for various occasions and body types.

Techniques Used

This intermediate-level knitting project employs several fundamental shaping techniques. The cardigan begins with ribbed edging at the lower edge, which provides elasticity and a neat finish. Armhole shaping is achieved through strategic cast-offs and decreases worked over multiple rows and alternate rows, creating a fitted sleeve opening. Front neck shaping uses decreases at the neck edge to create the neckline curve, while shoulder shaping through cast-offs ensures proper garment structure. The pattern requires careful attention to stitch counts across nine different size variations, with decreases and increases precisely placed to maintain proper garment proportions.

Stitches Used

  • Ribbing (rib) – Used for the lower edge and cuffs to create an elastic, fitted border
  • Stockinette stitch (st st) – The primary stitch throughout the body of the cardigan, created by alternating knit and purl rows to produce a smooth, classic fabric
  • Decreases – Worked at armholes, front neck, and other shaping points to reduce stitch counts and create fitted areas
  • Cast-offs – Used to bind off stitches at armholes and shoulders

Materials

This cardigan is knitted using Rowan Summerlite DK yarn, a lightweight double-knit weight yarn sold in 50-gram balls. The pattern specifies quantities for each size, with the photographed sample worked in Summerlite DK colorways Summer 453 and White 465. Knitting is worked on 3¾ mm (US 5) needles, and the pattern calls for six small buttons for the front closure. A tension of 22 stitches and 30 rows to 10 cm (4 inches) measured over stockinette stitch using the specified needles is essential for achieving the correct finished measurements. Stitch holders are required to hold stitches during construction, particularly for the neckband.
