Product Description
Sankaty Cardigan in Juniper Moon Findley DK
What Is Being Made
The Sankaty cardigan is a flirty, feminine cardigan named after a historic lighthouse on Nantucket. This knitted garment features lovely shaping details and is finished with a delicate lace edging. The cardigan is designed by Alison Green and is part of the Nantucket Collection. It closes with five ½-inch buttons and is available in seven sizes ranging from XS to 3X, with finished bust measurements from 32¼ inches to 53¼ inches and lengths from 22¾ inches to 26¾ inches.
Techniques Used
This cardigan employs several intermediate knitting techniques to achieve its tailored, feminine silhouette. Lifted increases (both right lifted increase and left lifted increase) are used to create gradual shaping throughout the garment. Shoulder shaping is worked using bind-off decreases at the beginning of right-side rows to create a fitted neckline. The cardigan features lace edging that adds a decorative, flirty finish to the garment. Stitch markers and scrap yarn or stitch holders are used to manage multiple sections during construction.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch pattern is the Wide Rib Pattern, which works over a multiple of 10 plus 3 stitches. This pattern alternates knit and purl stitches with twisted stitches (knit through back of loop) to create visual texture and vertical interest. The Wide Rib Pattern is worked in stockinette variations with the following row sequence:
- Row 1 (Right Side): K1, *k1 tbl, p1, k7, p1; repeat from * to last 2 stitches, k1 tbl, k1
- Row 2: P1, *p1 tbl, k1, p7, k1; repeat from * to last 2 stitches, p1 tbl, p1
Additional stitches incorporated include knit, purl, yarn overs for lace work, knit two together and purl two together decreases, and slip, slip, knit decreases. The lace edging is worked from a chart pattern, adding an openwork decorative border to the cardigan.
Materials
This cardigan is knitted using Juniper Moon Farm Findley DK yarn in color #07 Mermaid. The project requires 6 to 11 balls of yarn depending on the size being made (XS requires 6 balls, while 3X requires 11 balls). Knitting is worked on US 6 / 4 mm circular needles in lengths of 32 inches (80 cm) and 40 inches (100 cm) or longer. The gauge is 23 stitches and 30 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) in the Wide Rib Pattern. Additional notions include a tapestry needle for finishing, stitch markers for pattern tracking, scrap yarn or stitch holders for managing stitches, and five ½-inch (13 mm) buttons for closure.
