Zauberball has been kicked up a notch, as two strands of the main ply have been dyed individually and then twisted together for a crazy combination in Schoppel Wolle Zauberball Crazy! The end result is a self-striping multi-colored pattern, with a bold variegated design!

The slow repeats of colour are unpredictable, so if you are looking for symmetry in the final product DO NOT USE this yarn. If wearing 2 different socks does not phase you, you will LOVE this yarn.

The yarn is great for socks, hard-wearing thanks to the nylon, but thinner than most north-american knitters are used to. I love it on 1.75mm needles (US 00).

It is not "soft" and therefore not suitable for baby items. It's great for shawls also. Check out Ravelry for what folks have done with it!

I am a professional knitter. I developed a lovely scarf pattern that uses this yarn. It makes a lovely, artistic piece that's easy to sell.

My best selling scarf was a one skein Crazy Zauberball pattern. It was elegantly simple, yet VERY artistic. I developed the pattern four years ago and have knit it many, many times. I did a lot of commission work using Crazy Zauberballs and this pattern--and have a coffee can full of Zauberball tags to show for it.. I'm sorry to say that I'm going to have to rework this pattern using another manufacturer's yarn. The quality has recently dropped to the point that I can't honestly sell a piece--and be assured that it will perform the way my customers and I expect.

Zauberballs now have serious quality control problems.. First, they changed the source of their wool. They are using short staple length wool from Patagonia. This is MUCH coarser than the original product (which was not the softest product, but once washed and blocked was fine). It 's hand is now similar to that of Noro--which is UNACCEPTABLE for high end art craft pieces. Secondly, the balls are of uneven weight. I have purchased balls that turned out to be 90 grams, all the way up to 110 grams. My favorite commercial pattern works for a 100 gram ball. It WILL NOT work with balls that weigh less than 96 grams. (Learned the hard way.) I can live with this problem if I have an overweight and an underweight ball in the same colorway (take from the overweight ball, splice into the underweight ball). Thirdly, the reds and blues now bleed badly. I abandoned a scarf in colorway #2231 because I was getting dye on my hands while knitting--the yarn had been over dyed. I know that if I continue, I'm going to have a huge problem properly finishing the piece, so that it won't bleed for the customer. Fourth, the transitions between colors can be too abrupt--this is a new problem--that is, since the wool came from Patagonia.. I REALLY loved Crazy Zauberballs because their transition was smooth and interesting--I could get a pixelated effect, which made for a very artistic piece.

I either have to abandon a great bread and butter design or see if I can get it to work with another manufacturer's yarn. I'm NOT happy.

        Comments about 16.79 Zauberball Crazy:

I've knitted several scarves and cowls for myself and for others with this yarn. Most of the color combos are great. Unfortunately, this yarn is very itchy on my sensitive skin so I can only wear the items with a turtleneck. If they would make these yarns with merino, I would knit lots more in several color combos.

I love the changing colors as you knit. It is a little more coarse than I like so using Eucalan is helpful. I would buy this yarn over and over since I so love the color changes.

The colors are vibrant and rich. I bought this yarn for a hat that calls for sock yarn. I thought the variations in colors would make an interesting hat. I love the stitch definition, the softness of the fiber, and colors. Easy to knit with. Because of the varied colors knitting is fun and keeps me interested just to see what the next color group will become. Highly recommend this yarn.
