What is Being Made

The Sedgeford is a classic knitted sweater designed by Quail Studio and published by Mode at Rowan. This pullover garment is available in nine sizes, ranging from 71-76 cm (28-30 inches) chest to 152-157 cm (60-62 inches) chest, with finished chest measurements from 101 cm (39¾ inches) to 185.5 cm (73 inches). The sweater features a traditional construction with shaped raglan armholes, a fitted front neck shaping, and ribbed welts at the hem and cuffs.

Techniques Used

This advanced beginner knitting project employs several fundamental sweater construction techniques. The garment begins with a ribbed cuff and hem created using two-row rib pattern repeats. The body is worked in stockinette stitch, the foundational knit fabric used throughout most of the sweater. Raglan armhole shaping is achieved through strategic cast-offs and decreases, creating the characteristic diagonal seam lines from underarm to neckline. The front neck shaping uses decreases worked at the neck edge while simultaneously maintaining the raglan armhole decreases, requiring careful attention to multiple shaping lines. The pattern specifies 5mm (US size 8) needles, including one pair of straight needles and one circular needle no longer than 40 cm for working the neckline. A tension of 18 stitches and 24 rows to 10 cm, measured over stockinette stitch using 5mm needles, is essential for achieving the correct finished measurements.
