Sesia Carolina Boatneck Pullover

What is Being Made

The Sesia Carolina Boatneck Pullover is a classic knitted sweater designed by Teresa Chorzepa. This easy-level pullover features a distinctive boatneck neckline and is available in six sizes ranging from Small to 3X, with finished bust measurements from 37 inches (94 cm) to 57 inches (145 cm) and lengths from 23½ inches (59.5 cm) to 26 inches (66 cm). The sweater is an ideal layering piece with its elegant, timeless silhouette.

Construction Techniques

The Carolina Boatneck Pullover is constructed using a bottom-up, seamed approach, meaning the garment pieces are knitted individually from the lower edges upward and then sewn together. The body and sleeves are worked flat on straight needles, while the neckband is worked in the round using a circular needle. This hybrid construction method combines the simplicity of flat knitting for the main garment pieces with the seamless finish of circular knitting for the neckband, creating a polished final product.

Stitches Used

The pattern employs two primary stitch patterns:

  • Reverse Stockinette Stitch (Rev St st): This is the main fabric stitch used throughout the body and sleeves. Reverse Stockinette is created by purling on the right side and knitting on the wrong side, producing a textured, bumpy surface on the front of the garment that provides visual interest and a contemporary aesthetic.
  • K2, P2 Rib: This ribbed stitch pattern (knit 2 stitches, purl 2 stitches, repeated) is used for the cuffs and neckband. Ribbing is an elastic stitch pattern that provides stretch and recovery, helping the garment maintain its shape at the edges and ensuring a comfortable, fitted finish at the wrists and neck.

Materials and Gauge

The Carolina Boatneck Pullover is knitted using Sesia FLORA PAILLETTES, a luxurious blend of 95% cotton and 5% metallic polyester. This yarn composition provides breathability and comfort from the cotton content while the metallic polyester adds subtle shimmer and sophistication to the finished garment. The pattern requires 8 to 13 balls depending on size, with each ball weighing 0.88 ounces (25 grams) and containing 114 yards (105 meters) of yarn. The recommended color is #012 linen, a neutral shade that complements various outfits.

The pattern is worked on US size 7 (4.5mm) needles, with a 16-inch (40cm) circular needle required specifically for the neckband. The gauge is 20 stitches and 24 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) in Reverse Stockinette stitch. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for obtaining the proper finished measurements, and knitters are advised to take time to check their gauge before beginning the project. Additional supplies include stitch markers to help track shaping points and a yarn needle for weaving in ends and seaming the garment pieces together.
