Sesia Mia Capelet & Hat

What Is Being Made

The Sesia Mia Capelet & Hat is a coordinating two-piece set designed by Teresa Chorzepa. The capelet is a lightweight layering piece that drapes elegantly over the shoulders, available in three sizes: XS/Small, Medium/Large, and XL/2X, with a lower edge circumference ranging from 55¼ to 72¼ inches and a finished length of 15¾ inches. The matching hat is offered in two sizes—Small/Medium and Large/XL—with a lower edge circumference of 21 to 24 inches. Both pieces are crafted from Sesia HELLO DOLLY yarn, a luxurious blend of 50% wool, 32% viscose, 13% kid mohair, and 5% polyamide that creates a soft, fluid fabric ideal for elegant accessory wear.

Techniques Used

Bottom-Up Construction: Both the capelet and hat are worked from the bottom edge upward, allowing knitters to try on the pieces as they progress and easily adjust length if desired.

Seamless, Worked in the Round: Both garments are knitted seamlessly in the round using circular needles, eliminating the need for seaming and creating a smooth, professional finish. This technique is particularly effective for creating the flowing, continuous fabric required for a capelet.

Cable Work: The capelet features decorative cable panels that add visual interest and texture to the piece. The cables are strategically placed within reverse stockinette stitch sections to create dimensional patterning that enhances the garment's elegance.

Stitches Used

Reverse Stockinette Stitch (Rev St st): Formed by purling every round, this stitch creates a bumpy, textured surface that serves as the background for the cable panels and provides visual contrast to the smooth cable work.

Cable Stitches: The pattern employs two primary cable techniques:

  • C2F (Cable 2 Front): Slip 2 stitches to a cable needle and hold in front, knit 2 stitches from the main needle, then knit 2 stitches from the cable needle. This creates a cable that twists to the front.
  • C2B (Cable 2 Back): Slip 2 stitches to a cable needle and hold in back, knit 2 stitches from the main needle, then knit 2 stitches from the cable needle. This creates a cable that twists to the back.

Cable Panel: A 12-stitch repeat pattern that alternates between cable rows and knit rows, creating the distinctive textured motifs that appear throughout the capelet.

Decrease Stitches: The pattern incorporates p2tog (purl 2 together) and ssp (slip, slip, purl) decreases to shape the capelet as it progresses upward, gradually reducing stitch counts at strategic points to create the proper fit and drape.

Materials and Tools

Yarn: Sesia HELLO DOLLY in color #0495 poppy is used throughout. This yarn weighs 1.75 ounces per 50-gram ball and yields 88 yards per 80 meters. The capelet requires 8 to 11 balls depending on size, while the hat requires 2 balls. The blend of wool, viscose, kid mohair, and polyamide creates a yarn with excellent drape, softness, and a subtle sheen ideal for elegant accessories.

Needles: Size 9 (5.5mm) circular needles are used throughout the pattern. For the capelet, knitters will need both a 24-inch and 32-inch circular needle to accommodate the large stitch counts, with the pattern instructing knitters to change to the shorter needle when stitches no longer fit comfortably around the longer needle. For the hat, a 16-inch circular needle is used for the main body, along with a set of four size 9 (5.5mm) double-pointed needles for the crown decreases.

Notions: Stitch markers are essential for tracking pattern repeats and round beginnings, and a yarn needle is needed for weaving in ends.

Gauge and Sizing

The pattern is worked to a gauge of 21 stitches and 24 rows over 4 inches in stockinette stitch. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished measurements and ensuring the capelet and hat fit as designed. The intermediate
