Sesia Noah Pullover
What is Being Made
The Sesia Noah Pullover is an intermediate-level knitted sweater designed by Lidia Karabinech. This classic pullover is available in four sizes—Small, Medium, Large, and Extra Large—with the sample garment shown in size Medium. The finished pullover features a bust measurement of 37 to 48½ inches (94 to 123 cm) and a length to shoulder of 22 inches (56 cm), designed to fit with 3 to 5 inches of positive ease for a comfortable, relaxed fit.
Knitting Techniques Used
The Noah Pullover is constructed using several key knitting techniques that build foundational skills:
- Bottom-up construction: The sweater is knitted from the bottom edge upward, allowing knitters to try on the garment as they progress and easily adjust length before completing the shoulders.
- Worked flat: The body and sleeves are knitted on straight needles in flat pieces rather than in the round, making this an accessible project for knitters who prefer traditional flat knitting methods.
- Seamed assembly: Individual pieces are sewn together using a yarn needle, creating clean, professional-looking seams.
- German short rows: Advanced shaping at the shoulders and back neck uses German short rows (DS), a wrapping-free technique that creates smooth, sculptural shaping without visible gaps or holes.
- Neckband finishing: The neckline is completed with a circular needle for a professional, stretchy ribbed finish.
Stitches Used
The Noah Pullover incorporates two primary stitch patterns:
- Seed Stitch: Used for the ribbed cuff at the lower edge, Seed Stitch is worked over an odd number of stitches by alternating knit and purl stitches in each row. This creates a textured, bumpy fabric with excellent stretch and recovery, making it ideal for cuffs and edges that need to stay in place.
- Stockinette Stitch (St st): The main body of the sweater is worked in Stockinette Stitch, the most fundamental knit stitch pattern. Stockinette is created by knitting all stitches on right-side rows and purling all stitches on wrong-side rows, producing the smooth, classic V-textured fabric familiar to most knitters.
Materials and Gauge
The Noah Pullover is knitted with Sesia Bonbon yarn, a luxurious blend of 44% cotton, 36% alpaca, and 20% virgin wool. This fiber combination creates a fabric that is breathable, soft, and drapes beautifully. The pattern requires 4 to 6 balls of yarn depending on size, with each ball weighing 1.75 ounces (50 grams) and containing 240 yards (220 meters) of yarn. The sample shown uses color 6177 sugar, a neutral shade suitable for versatile styling.
The pattern is worked at a gauge of 17 stitches and 25 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) in Stockinette Stitch using US size 6 (4.0mm) needles, blocked and measured after washing. Achieving correct gauge is essential for proper fit. The pattern also requires US size 5 (3.75mm) needles for the Seed Stitch cuff, a US size 6 (4mm) circular needle measuring 16 inches (40cm) for the neckband, removable stitch markers to track pattern sections, stitch holders to temporarily secure stitches, and a yarn needle for seaming pieces together.
This downloadable PDF pattern is published by Tahki Stacy Charles and represents a well-structured intermediate project that teaches essential knitting techniques while producing a wearable, elegant garment.
