Sesia Sadie Tee
What is Being Made
The Sadie Tee is a knitted short-sleeved sweater designed by Susan Baron. This garment is an easy-level project available in six sizes ranging from Small to 3X, with finished bust measurements from 31½ inches (81.5 cm) to 50¾ inches (131.5 cm). The tee is designed to fit with 0–2 inches of negative ease and features lengths ranging from 19¼ inches (49 cm) in the smallest size to 24¼ inches (61.5 cm) in the largest size, making it a versatile wardrobe staple suitable for various body types and preferences.
Techniques Used
The Sadie Tee is constructed using multiple knitting techniques to create a well-finished garment. The sweater is worked flat for certain sections and worked in the round for others, allowing for efficient construction and minimal seaming. The garment is seamed where necessary to join pieces together, and it is built bottom-up, meaning you begin knitting from the lower edge and work upward toward the neckline. This construction method provides excellent control over fit and allows for easy adjustments during the knitting process.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch pattern featured in the Sadie Tee is K4, P2 Rib, which creates a textured, elastic fabric with excellent stretch and recovery. This ribbed pattern is worked throughout the garment and contributes to the fitted silhouette. The pattern incorporates standard knitting abbreviations and techniques including:
- Knit (k) and purl (p) stitches as foundational elements
- Knit 2 together (K2tog) for decreasing stitches
- Slip, slip, knit (ssk) for left-leaning decreases
- Make 1 left (M1L) and Make 1 right (M1R) for invisible increases that maintain pattern integrity
- Single crochet (sc) finishing, worked with a crochet hook for refined edges
Materials and Gauge
The Sadie Tee is designed to be knitted with Sesia BIO BIMBO, a 100% organic cotton yarn. The yardage requirements range from 4 balls for the smallest size to 7 balls for the largest size. Each ball contains 1.75 ounces (50 grams) and provides 196 yards (179 meters) of yarn, offering approximately 784 to 1,372 total yards depending on size selected. The sample shown is worked in color #2244 wildflowers.
The pattern calls for US size 4 (3.5mm) circular needles measuring 24 inches (60 cm) long, or a size that allows you to achieve the specified gauge. US size 4 (3.5mm) double-pointed needles (dpns) are also required for working smaller circumferences, such as sleeves. A crochet hook size E-4 (3.5mm) is needed for finishing techniques, including single crochet edging.
The recommended gauge is 26 stitches and 33 rounds equal 4 inches (10 cm) when working the K4, P2 Rib pattern in the round, lightly stretched and blocked. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished measurements and fit, and knitters are advised to knit and block a gauge swatch before beginning the project.
Additional Supplies
Beyond yarn and needles, the pattern requires stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping points, a stitch holder or waste yarn for temporarily holding stitches, and a yarn needle for weaving in ends and seaming pieces together when required by the construction method.
