Product Description
Shale Slipover in Rowan Merino Aria
What Is Being Made
The Shale Slipover is a knitted vest or sleeveless pullover garment designed by Georgia Farrell. This intermediate-level knitting project is available in nine size options, ranging from bust measurements of 71–76 cm (28–30 inches) up to 152–157 cm (60–62 inches), making it suitable for a wide range of body sizes. The finished garment features an actual bust measurement range of 81.5 cm to 164.5 cm depending on the chosen size.
Knitting Techniques and Construction
The Shale Slipover employs several fundamental knitting techniques to create a well-fitted, structured garment. The pattern begins with a ribbed cuff worked on smaller needles to create elasticity and shape retention. The main body is constructed using a stitch pattern that is maintained throughout the front and back pieces, ensuring visual continuity across the garment.
Shaping is achieved through strategic decreases at the neck edge, worked at regular intervals over alternating rows and fourth rows to create a gradual, professional neckline. Shoulder shaping is accomplished through stepped cast-offs at the beginning of rows, a classic technique that creates clean, angled shoulder seams. The garment features a divided front neck opening, with stitches held on holders during construction to be picked up later for the neckband.
The neckband is worked on a circular needle and is constructed from held stitches, creating a finished edge without a visible seam. Assembly uses either backstitch or mattress stitch for joining shoulder seams, with pressing recommended to finish the garment professionally.
Stitches Used
- Knit stitch (K) – the primary stitch forming the main fabric
- Purl stitch (P) – used in combination with knit stitches to create textured patterning
- Ribbing – alternating knit and purl stitches in a 1×1 pattern (K1, P1) for elasticity at the cast-on edge
- Decreases – single stitch decreases worked at the neck edge to shape the neckline gradually
- Cast-off – used to bind off stitches at shoulder shaping and garment completion
Materials and Gauge
The Shale Slipover is designed to be knitted using Rowan Merino Aria yarn, a 50-gram ball weight. The pattern is photographed in the colorway Deep Teal 053, though the design can be worked in any color available in this yarn line. Merino Aria is a premium merino wool yarn, chosen for its softness, breathability, and drape qualities.
The pattern requires two sizes of needles: 6½mm (US 10/10½) needles for the ribbed cast-on and initial rows, and 7mm (US 10½) needles for the main body pattern. A 6½mm (US 10/10½) circular needle no longer than 50 cm is required for working the neckband.
The specified tension is 14 stitches and 22 rows to 10 centimeters, measured over the pattern stitch using the 7mm needles. Achieving correct gauge is essential for obtaining the proper finished measurements and garment fit.
