Shibui Knits Amos Boxy Pullover

What is Being Made

The Amos is a boxy pullover sweater designed as the perfect spring layer. Featuring cool, crisp lines and breezy stripes, this pullover offers a relaxed, contemporary silhouette with finished bust circumferences ranging from 42 to 58 inches to accommodate sizes XS through XXL. The garment is available in both short-sleeve and long-sleeve versions, making it versatile for various seasons and styling preferences.

Techniques Used

Amos is constructed using a bottom-up, worked-flat approach, which allows for straightforward shaping and ease of construction. The body is knitted flat from the hem upward, providing excellent control over fit and stitch definition. Sleeves are worked flat from the cuff up before being set in and seamed to the body, a classic tailoring technique that creates clean, professional-looking armholes. The collar is worked in the round using the 3-Needle Bind-Off technique, where stitches are picked up around the neckline and worked on smaller needles for a refined finish.

Stitches Used

The primary stitch throughout Amos is Stockinette Stitch (St st), which creates the smooth, classic fabric base. The pattern incorporates a stripe pattern that is achieved by alternating rows: some rows are worked with a single strand of Vine yarn alone, while other rows are worked with one strand of Vine held together with one strand of Fern. This color-blocking technique creates the distinctive breezy striped aesthetic without requiring complex stitch variations.

Materials and Yarn

Shibui Knits Vine is a premium blended yarn composed of 41% Paper, 31% Cotton, and 28% Silk, with 160 yards per 30-gram skein. For the long-sleeve version, 4 to 6 skeins are required depending on size; for the short-sleeve version, 3 to 5 skeins are needed.

Shibui Knits Fern is a 100% Organic Cotton yarn offering 232 yards per 50-gram skein. Long-sleeve versions require 3 to 5 skeins, while short-sleeve versions need 2 to 4 skeins, depending on the finished size.

Tools and Needles

  • Size 8 (5 mm) needles for the main body and sleeves, used to achieve the pattern gauge of 15 stitches and 20 rows over 4 inches in Stockinette Stitch with the stripe pattern after blocking
  • Size 2 (2.75 mm) 16-inch circular needle for working the collar in the round
  • Spare size 8 needle for the 3-Needle Bind-Off technique
  • Stitch holders for managing stitches during construction
  • Tapestry needle for seaming and finishing

Skill Level and Pattern Details

Amos is rated as an Intermediate skill level project, suitable for knitters with foundational experience in flat knitting, seaming, and picking up stitches. The pattern is thoughtfully designed with multiple size options and includes both short and long sleeve variations, allowing knitters to customize the finished garment. The model pictured is 5' 9" and wears a Size S with approximately 10 inches of positive ease, demonstrating the relaxed, boxy fit intended by the designer.
