Shibui Knits District: Colorblock Scarf & Hat Set

What Is Being Made

The District pattern by Shellie Anderson is a coordinated set of two easy-level knit accessories featuring striking colorblock design. The collection includes a scarf and matching hat, both showcasing rich, complementary tones created through strategic color blocking with Shibui Knits Dune yarn. These accessories are designed as a cohesive pair, with the scarf measuring 11 inches wide by 64 inches long, and the hat standing 9 inches tall with a 23-inch circumference for one-size-fits-most wear.

Techniques Used

The District accessories employ colorblock striping as the primary design technique, creating visual interest through the strategic placement of contrasting yarn colors. The scarf is constructed by working blocks of stockinette stitch in separate color sections, then using a tapestry needle to cinch the blocks closed and create the finished colorblock effect. A color accent is added by picking up and knitting stitches along one long edge of the scarf using a contrasting color, adding depth to the final design. The hat is worked in the round using multiple colors (A, C, and D), allowing for seamless integration of the colorblock pattern throughout. Both pieces are blocked to finished measurements to enhance stitch definition and ensure proper drape.

Stitches Used

Both the scarf and hat are primarily worked in Stockinette stitch (St st), the fundamental knit stitch that creates a smooth, classic fabric with a distinctive V-pattern appearance. The patterns also incorporate Make One (M1) increases to shape the pieces as needed. Finishing techniques include weaving in ends with a tapestry needle and blocking the completed pieces to achieve precise finished dimensions and optimal fabric characteristics.

Materials

Both the scarf and hat are crafted from Shibui Knits Dune, a luxurious blend comprising 50% Baby Alpaca, 25% Baby Camel, and 25% Silk. This fiber combination creates a soft, elegant yarn with excellent drape and a subtle sheen. The scarf requires 2 skeins each of two colors plus 1 skein each of two additional colors (4 skeins total at 142 yards per 50-gram skein). The hat uses 1 skein each of three colors plus additional yardage from the scarf materials, making efficient use of yarn when both pieces are created together. The pattern is worked on size 6 (4 mm) circular needles for the hat, with a 32-inch or longer circular needle recommended for Magic Loop construction, and size 6 needles for the scarf. Additional tools include stitch markers and a tapestry needle for finishing and color accent work. The scarf pattern notes call for size 3 and size 4 needles as well, allowing gauge flexibility. Finished gauge is 21 stitches and 30 rows over 4 inches in stockinette stitch after blocking with one strand of Dune on size 6 needles.
