What is Being Made

The Facade is an unisex textured scarf designed by Shellie Anderson for Shibui Knits. This one-size scarf measures 10.5 inches in width and 66 inches in length after blocking, offering a modern accessory that balances comfort with contemporary style. The finished scarf features textural segments that provide visual and tactile dimension, making it suitable for a range of styling occasions.

Techniques Used

This scarf is worked flat on straight needles using seamless construction methods. The pattern employs Mattress stitch for finishing, which creates invisible seams when joining the turned hems. The scarf incorporates a chain cast-on technique using waste yarn, allowing for a clean, professional edge. The design uses slip stitch techniques at the beginning of rows to create neat selvage edges, with stitches slipped purlwise with yarn held appropriately in back or in front depending on the row direction.

Stitches Used

• Stockinette Stitch — the primary stitch throughout most of the scarf, created by knitting right-side rows and purling wrong-side rows
• Textured Pattern — featuring yarn overs and decreases (pass yarn over 2 knit stitches) that create the dimensional texture segments
• Slip Stitch — worked purlwise at the beginning of each row to establish clean edges
• Mattress Stitch — used during finishing to seam the turned hems invisibly

Materials and Gauge

The Facade requires two premium Shibui Knits yarns held together throughout most of the pattern. Shibui Maai (70% superbaby alpaca, 30% fine merino, 175 yards per 50 grams) and Shibui Staccato (70% superwash merino, 30% silk, 191 yards per 50 grams) are each used for 3 skeins. The combination of these two strands creates both structure and soft drape. Note that for the turned hems only, Staccato is held single rather than doubled.

The scarf is worked on size 8 (5 mm) needles for the main body, with size 6 (4 mm) needles used for the hem sections. The gauge is 19 stitches and 25 rows over 4 inches in Stockinette stitch after blocking, when working with one strand of Maai and one strand of Staccato held together. Due to Maai's chainette structure, the yarn relaxes after washing, making it essential to wash and block gauge swatches to ensure accurate measurements and prevent requiring additional yarn.

Pattern Notes

This project is rated as Easy skill level, making it accessible to knitters with basic experience. The pattern uses a waste yarn provisional cast-on technique, requiring a crochet hook and spare size 6 needle in addition to the main needles. A tapestry needle is needed for weaving in ends and executing the Mattress stitch seaming. Pre-blocking measurements are 10 inches wide by 61 inches long, expanding to the finished dimensions of 10.5 inches by 66 inches after blocking.
