Shibui Knits Frame - Monochrome Collection by Kirsten Johnstone
Project Overview
The Frame pattern is a coordinated two-piece knitting set consisting of a hat and handwarmers (fingerless gloves) designed to be worked as complementary accessories. This intermediate-level project showcases the visual impact of stranded colorwork through a clever reversal of tones between the two garments. The hat features a double-brimmed toque silhouette, while the handwarmers are delicate mitts, both constructed with graphic outlines that add visual interest to smooth stockinette surfaces.
Hat Specifications
Finished Dimensions: 22.25″ circumference and 10″ tall
Skill Level: Intermediate
The hat is worked seamlessly in the round using stranded colorwork techniques. The double-brimmed construction creates a refined silhouette, with the reversal of color placement between the hat and handwarmers establishing maximum visual contrast within the coordinated set.
Handwarmers Specifications
Finished Dimensions: 7.5″ circumference and 10.75″ length
Skill Level: Intermediate
The handwarmers are lightweight mitts designed to complement the hat. Like the hat, they feature stranded colorwork with reversed color placement, creating a cohesive yet visually dynamic accessory pair.
Techniques and Construction Methods
- Bottom-up construction: Both garments are worked from the bottom upward
- Seamless, worked in the round: Circular needles and double-pointed needles create seamless tubes without seaming
- Stranded colorwork: Two colors are carried simultaneously across rows to create graphic pattern outlines on stockinette backgrounds
- Stockinette stitch: The primary stitch structure provides a smooth, refined fabric surface ideal for showcasing colorwork
Yarn and Materials
Yarn: Shibui Pebble, a luxury blend composed of 48% recycled silk, 36% fine merino, and 16% cashmere. Each skein provides 224 yards at 25 grams.
Yardage Requirements: When worked as a coordinated set, the hat and handwarmers together require 2 skeins each of Color A and Color B (4 skeins total). The pattern is shown in Ivory (Color A) and Abyss (Color B).
Gauge: 26 stitches and 30 rounds equal 4 inches in stranded colorwork stockinette stitch after blocking, using two strands of Pebble held together.

Design Features
The Frame collection emphasizes sophisticated minimalism through its monochrome palette and graphic stranded colorwork patterns. The use of contrasting shades creates bold outline effects against smooth stockinette backgrounds. The luxury fiber blend—combining recycled silk, fine merino, and cashmere—ensures that despite their lightweight construction, both the hat and handwarmers provide genuine warmth. The coordinated nature of the set, enhanced by the intentional reversal of color placement between garments, creates maximum visual impact while maintaining the refined aesthetic characteristic of Shibui Knits designs.
