Skill Level: Intermediate

Techniques Used

  • Bottom-up construction: The body is worked from the hem upward
  • Seamless knitting in the round: The lower body is worked circularly from hem to armholes for a seamless construction
  • Worked flat: After the armholes are divided, the front and back are worked flat to the shoulders
  • Stripes: Contrasting color blocks are created through strategic color changes
  • 3-needle bind-off: Pieces are joined using the 3-needle bind-off technique, with right sides held together and stitches bound off as they are knitted together
  • Crochet provisional cast-on: A temporary cast-on method using waste yarn and a crochet hook creates live stitches that can be released later for seamless finishing

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

Stockinette stitch (St st) is the primary stitch throughout the garment. The gauge is 19 stitches and 28 rows over 4 inches in stockinette stitch on larger needles with Silk Cloud held double, measured after steam blocking.

Materials and Tools

Yarn: Shibui Silk Cloud (60% kid mohair, 40% silk), 330 yards per 25 grams. The pattern requires 3 (3, 3, 3, 4) skeins of Color A and 3 (3, 3, 3, 3) skeins of Color B. The example shown uses Cypress as Color A and Field as Color B. Two strands of Silk Cloud are held together throughout the project to create the desired fabric weight and drape.

Needles: Size 4 (3.5 mm) circular needles in 16" and 24" lengths, and Size 6 (4 mm) circular needles for working the body.

Additional Tools: A crochet hook is required for the provisional cast-on method, and waste yarn is needed for the temporary cast-on.

Yarn Characteristics and Fabric Properties

Shibui Silk Cloud is a luxurious blend of kid mohair and silk that creates a distinctive fabric character. When held double as specified in this pattern, the yarn knits up into a plush yet remarkably lightweight fabric. The haloed quality of the kid mohair contributes to the soft, ethereal appearance of the finished garment. The silk content provides strength and drape, allowing the sweater to hang beautifully while maintaining its shape. The combination of these fibers results in a gauzy, draping pullover that is both elegant and practical for layering.
