Product Description
Shibui Knits Mix No. 31 Turtleneck Sweater
What is Being Made
Shibui Knits Mix No. 31 is a casually chic turtleneck sweater designed by Lori Versaci. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a luxuriously soft pullover sweater featuring a deep shirt-tail hem with curved hemline shaping, twin rib details, and a comfortable A-line silhouette. The design combines clean construction with refined details, making it a versatile weekend piece suitable for varied styling occasions.
Construction Techniques
This sweater is constructed using a combination of flat and in-the-round knitting techniques. The front and back panels are worked flat on circular needles from the bottom up to the underarms. The sleeves are worked in the round from the cuff upward to the underarms. Once all four pieces reach the underarms, they are joined together and the yoke is worked in the round to the neckline. The collar stitches are then picked up and worked from the neckline downward. Short row shaping is employed to create the curved hemline, while vertical darts along the front and back panels produce the pleasing A-line body shaping.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The primary stitch pattern used throughout this design is stockinette stitch, which provides a smooth, classic fabric base. Twin rib is featured as a decorative and structural detail. When worked flat, the twin rib pattern uses a multiple of 6 stitches plus 2 edge stitches, alternating between knit and purl stitches in a specific sequence. When worked in the round, the twin rib uses a multiple of 6 stitches with the same alternating knit and purl pattern. The pattern also incorporates the S2KP (slip 2 stitches together knitwise, knit 1, pass 2 slipped stitches over) decrease technique, which decreases 2 stitches in a single maneuver. Short row shaping using the wrap and turn method (w&t) creates the curved hemline.
Materials and Tools
The sweater is knit holding one strand of Shibui Cima and one strand of Shibui Baby Alpaca together throughout the project. Shibui Cima is composed of 70% superbaby alpaca and 30% fine merino, with 328 yards per 50-gram skein. Shibui Baby Alpaca is 100% baby alpaca, with 255 yards per 100-gram skein. Yarn quantities vary by size: sizes XS through L and XL require 4 skeins of Cima and 5 skeins of Baby Alpaca, while sizes XXL require 5 skeins of Cima and 6 skeins of Baby Alpaca. The project requires multiple circular needles: a 16-inch size 8 (5 mm) circular needle for the ribbed cuffs and collar, a 32-inch size 9 (5.5 mm) circular needle for the main body and yoke, size 9 double-pointed needles for sleeve work, and a 32-inch size 10 (6 mm) circular needle for additional sizing options. The recommended gauge is 18 stitches and 23 rows over 4 inches in stockinette stitch after blocking, using size 9 needles while holding both yarn strands together.
Sizing and Finished Dimensions
Shibui Knits Mix No. 31 is available in six sizes: XS, S, M, L, XL, and XXL. The finished bust circumference measurements range from 35.5 inches for the XS to 50 inches for the XXL, with the model shown being size S at 5 feet 9 inches tall wearing the sweater with 6 inches of positive ease throughout. The length from the top of the shoulder measures between 27.25 and 29.25 inches depending on size.
