Shibui Knits Motif Textured Wrap

What Is Being Made

The Shibui Knits Motif is a sophisticated textured wrap designed by Shellie Anderson. This one-size wrap measures 20 inches in width and 60 inches in length, making it a versatile accessory suitable for layering or draping. The wrap features repetitive textured elements that transverse across its surface, creating visual interest and dimension. The slight sheen of the Dune yarn enhances the drape and elevates the wrap to a luxurious finished piece.

Techniques Used

This wrap is worked seamlessly and flat using a straightforward construction method. The pattern begins and ends with Reverse Stockinette Stitch borders that create a slightly curled edge, framing the central textured design. The main body features a charted motif pattern that is repeated across the width and length of the piece. Knitters follow an 18-stitch repeat pattern worked 5 times across, completing 19 full repeats of the 24-row chart. The wrap is finished with steam blocking to achieve precise measurements and enhance the drape of the luxurious fiber blend.

Stitches Used

  • Reverse Stockinette Stitch: Used for the top and bottom borders, this stitch is created by purling on the right side and knitting on the wrong side. It produces a textured, bumpy surface and is worked for 6 rows at the beginning and 6 rows at the end of the wrap.
  • Stockinette Stitch: The foundation stitch used throughout the wrap, created by knitting on the right side and purling on the wrong side.
  • Charted Motif Pattern: A textured design worked using combinations of knit and purl stitches following a chart. The pattern creates the sophisticated repetitive elements that define the wrap's aesthetic.

Materials and Tools

The Shibui Knits Motif wrap is knitted using Shibui Dune yarn, a luxurious blend composed of 50% baby alpaca, 25% baby camel, and 25% silk. This fiber combination creates the characteristic slight sheen and exceptional drape that distinguishes the finished wrap. A total of 7 skeins (142 yards per 50g skein) is required to complete the project. The yarn shown in the pattern is colorway Brownstone.

Knitters will need Size 6 (4 mm) needles to work the wrap. The recommended gauge is 21 stitches and 32 rows over 4 inches in Stockinette Stitch after blocking, worked with one strand of Dune on size 6 needles. Obtaining accurate gauge is essential to ensure the wrap reaches the correct finished dimensions and that additional yarn is not required. A tapestry needle is needed for weaving in ends during finishing.

Skill Level

This pattern is rated as Easy, making it accessible to knitters with basic skills. The straightforward construction, simple stitch combinations, and charted pattern guidance make this an ideal project for those looking to expand their skills while creating a sophisticated, wearable garment.
