Shibui Knits Zona Cardigan Vest

What Is Being Made

The Zona Cardigan is a modern layering vest designed by Shellie Anderson that redefines traditional vest construction. This architectural piece features crisp shaping and overlapping front edges, making it a sophisticated garment suitable for contemporary wardrobes. The vest is available in seven sizes ranging from XS to XXL, with finished bust circumferences from 35 inches to 51 inches, accommodating various body types and fit preferences.

Construction Techniques

Zona is worked flat from the bottom up, beginning with a turned hem for a finished edge. The garment uses a seamed construction method, allowing for precise shaping and professional finishing. Short dolman sleeves are formed through a unique technique: stitches are cast on at the armhole and worked separately, featuring Garter Stitch casings that are turned in and seamed for a polished look. The front panels feature overlapping edges, also finished with Garter Stitch casings, creating the vest's distinctive architectural silhouette.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns Used

  • Stockinette Stitch (St st) — The primary stitch throughout the body, creating a smooth, classic fabric
  • Garter Stitch — Used for the sleeve casings and front edge casings, providing structure and a textured finish
  • Slip Stitch — Incorporated in the pattern for shaping and decorative edge detail
  • 3-Needle Bind-Off — Used for joining seams with a professional finish

Materials and Tools

The Zona Cardigan is knitted using two premium yarns held together throughout the project. Shibui Knits Birch, a 100% Extra Fine Merino yarn, is paired with Shibui Knits Cima, which is composed of 70% Superbaby Alpaca and 30% Fine Merino. This combination creates a unique texture and sophisticated drape. Yardage requirements vary by size: Birch requires 6 to 8 skeins (262 yards per 50-gram skein), while Cima requires 5 to 6 skeins (328 yards per 50-gram skein).

The pattern calls for multiple needle sizes to achieve proper gauge and construction. Size 6 (4 mm) needles are used for the initial cast-on and turning row, while Size 8 (5 mm) needles are used for the main body knitting. A Size H (5 mm) crochet hook is included in the tools list, along with waste yarn, stitch markers, stitch holders, and a tapestry needle for finishing and seaming.

Gauge and Sizing Information

The pattern specifies a gauge of 20 stitches and 24 rows over 4 inches in Stockinette Stitch after blocking, achieved when working with one strand of Birch and one strand of Cima held together on Size 8 needles. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished dimensions. The vest is designed for an experienced knitter and includes detailed sizing from XS through XXL, with back length measurements ranging from 31.5 inches to 33.5 inches depending on size. The model shown is 5'9" wearing Size S with approximately 2.5 inches of positive ease.
