Sigrid Sweater in MODE at Rowan Alpaca Haze and Cotton DK

What is Being Made

The Sigrid Sweater is an advanced knitting pattern designed by Quail Studio for a fitted pullover sweater available in nine sizes ranging from 71–76 cm (28–30 inches) to 152–157 cm (60–62 inches) chest measurement. The finished garment features actual chest measurements from 98.5 cm (38¾ inches) up to 178.5 cm (70¼ inches), accommodating a wide range of body sizes. This is a bottom-up construction garment with sleeves worked in the round to the armholes before being joined to the body for yoke shaping.

Construction Techniques

The Sigrid Sweater employs a sophisticated bottom-up knitting method with seamless in-the-round construction. The body is cast on and worked circularly from the hem upward to the armholes. Sleeves are independently worked in the round using double-pointed needles, then joined to the body where yoke shaping is completed in the round. This technique eliminates seaming and creates a smooth, professional finish. The pattern begins with ribbed edging at the hem, which is worked for 8 centimeters before transitioning to stockinette stitch on larger needles.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns Used

  • Ribbing: Alternating knit and purl stitches (K1, P1) form the elastic cuff at the hem and neckband, providing structure and recovery
  • Stockinette Stitch: Smooth knit stitches worked in the round (st st) form the primary fabric of the body and sleeves
  • Yoke Shaping: Decreases are incorporated during yoke construction to create a fitted shoulder and neckline

Yarn and Materials

The Sigrid Sweater is designed to be worked with two distinct yarns held together throughout construction. Yarn A is Alpaca Haze in the colorway Peony 017, a luxury fiber available in 25-gram balls. Quantities range from 8 balls for the smallest size to 15 balls for the largest size. Yarn B is Cotton DK in Bubblegum 017, supplied in 50-gram balls in the same quantity range as Yarn A. The pattern specifies holding 2 strands of Alpaca Haze and 1 strand of Cotton DK together throughout, creating a blended yarn that combines the softness and warmth of alpaca with the breathability and structure of cotton.

Needles and Gauge

The pattern requires two sizes of circular needles and double-pointed needles in metric and US sizing. 5mm (US 8) circular needles are used for the initial body cast-on and ribbing, available in lengths from 100 to 160 centimeters depending on size. 6mm (US 10) circular needles in corresponding lengths are used after the ribbing transition for the main stockinette stitch body. 5mm (US 8) double-pointed needles are used to cast on and work the sleeves initially, while 6mm (US 10) double-pointed needles are used for sleeve continuation and the neckband ribbing.

The pattern is worked to a tension of 15 stitches and 22 rows per 10 centimeters measured over stockinette stitch using 6mm (US 10) needles with the specified yarn combination of 2 strands of Alpaca Haze and 1 strand of Cotton DK held together. Achieving correct gauge is essential for proper fit across all nine sizes.

Additional Supplies

Beyond yarn and needles, the pattern requires stitch markers to denote the beginning of rounds and track pattern repeats, as well as stitch holders to temporarily secure stitches during construction, particularly when joining sleeves to the body and shaping the yoke.
