Sirdar Long Cardigan in Jewelspun

What is Being Made

This is a long line cardigan jacket designed as an intermediate-level knitting project. The garment features a flattering, extended length silhouette available in six sizes ranging from 81/86 cm (32/34") through 132/137 cm (52/54") chest measurements. The cardigan showcases a Scandi-style aesthetic with a sophisticated, minimalist design that works equally well as a layering piece or standalone statement jacket.

Techniques Used

The Sirdar Long Cardigan is constructed using bottom-up knitting methodology, meaning the garment is worked from the lower edge upward. The design employs a seamed construction approach, with individual pieces knitted separately and then joined together to create the finished garment. All pieces are worked flat on straight needles rather than in the round, allowing for straightforward shaping and a traditional cardigan construction method that is well-suited to intermediate knitters.

Stitches and Stitch Work

While the pattern document does not specify particular decorative stitch patterns, the construction relies on fundamental knitting stitches worked at a consistent tension. The garment requires careful attention to tension to achieve proper fit across the six size options, with the specified tension being 18 stitches over 10 cm (4 inches) when worked on 5mm needles.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

This cardigan is designed to be knitted in Sirdar Jewelspun, an aran weight yarn that blends opulent colors to achieve a hand-spun appearance while maintaining easy care properties. Jewelspun is offered in six flattering shades, including 842 Nordic Noir (the shade shown in the pattern), 839 Northern, 843 Setting Sun, and 844 Glacier Lights. Each ball of Jewelspun contains 200g of yarn.

Yardage requirements vary by size:

  • Sizes S, M, and L require 3 balls of yarn
  • Sizes XL, XXL, and XXXL require 4 balls of yarn

The pattern specifies two needle sizes for construction:

  • 5mm (UK size 6 / USA size 8) knitting needles for the main fabric
  • 4½mm (UK size 7 / USA size 7) knitting needles for ribbed edgings or other sections requiring a tighter gauge

Design Details and Finished Measurements

The long cardigan offers generous finished widths across all sizes, ranging from 114 cm (45") for size S to 167 cm (66") for size XXXL. The extended length provides coverage from 82 cm (32¼") to 92 cm (36¼") depending on size, creating the distinctive long line silhouette. Sleeve length remains consistent at approximately 44-46 cm (17¼"-18") across most sizes, with slight variations in the smaller sizes.

Sirdar, established in West Yorkshire in 1880, is a British yarn company renowned for its hand knitting heritage. The brand triple-checks all patterns to guarantee successful results when using recommended Sirdar yarns, ensuring that knitters can confidently create this intermediate cardigan project with professional-quality outcomes.

I must say I'm very disappointed in your website since you changed it. It's very difficult to find things. Additionally, I requested help getting to my Pattern Library and all I've had in response is the usual automated response saying someone will get back to me. For some reason when I tried to get to the library, 99% of the time, it tells me my library is empty. I've only been able to get to it twice. This is unacceptable. Please tell me what's wrong and fix it!
