Sirdar Kids Striped Colourblock Dress in Replay

What is Being Made

This is a striped tunic dress designed for children aged 3 to 7 years. The garment features a colourblock design created through the use of multiple coordinating yarn colours in the Sirdar Snuggly Replay range. The dress is suitable for everyday wear and is designed to be comfortable and practical for active children. Sizes range from 59 cm chest (age 3 years) to 69 cm chest (age 7 years), with full lengths varying from 56 cm to 65 cm depending on the child's age.

Knitting Techniques Used

This intermediate-level knitting project uses double knitting as the primary construction method. Double knitting is a versatile technique that creates a fabric with excellent drape and durability, making it ideal for children's garments that need to withstand regular wear and washing. The striped colourblock design is achieved by working with six different yarn colours throughout the pattern, requiring careful colour changes and management of multiple yarn balls during the knitting process. The pattern includes shaping for the armholes, neckline, and sleeves to create a well-fitted tunic silhouette suitable for young children.

Stitches Used

While specific stitch details are not fully outlined in the provided pattern information, the double knitting technique typically employs fundamental stitches including knit and purl stitches worked in combination to create the fabric structure. The intermediate difficulty level suggests the pattern incorporates standard shaping techniques such as increases and decreases for armhole and neckline shaping, as well as sleeve cap construction. Ribbing is commonly used in double knitting patterns for cuffs, waistbands, and necklines to provide elasticity and a neat finish.

Materials Required

This project is worked in Sirdar Snuggly Replay, a double knitting weight yarn specifically designed for children. Snuggly Replay is a cotton blend yarn available in soft, marled shades that are lightweight, washable, and gentle on sensitive skin. The yarn comes in six coordinating colours for this design: shade 121 (Midnight Snack), shade 122 (Quiet Violet), shade 116 (Race Car Red), shade 119, shade 120, and shade 117. The pattern requires between 1 and 2 balls of each colour depending on the child's size, with yarn requirements ranging from approximately 6 to 9 balls total across all six colours.

Standard knitting needles appropriate for double knitting yarn weight are required to complete this project. The pattern has been triple-checked by Sirdar to guarantee success when using their recommended Snuggly Replay yarns, ensuring that tension and yardage calculations are accurate for this specific yarn.

Design Features

The striped colourblock design creates a visually interesting garment with nostalgic appeal, inspired by favourite childhood outfits. The use of marled yarn shades adds texture and depth to the striped pattern. The tunic length and relaxed fit make this dress suitable for layering over long-sleeved tops during cooler months or wearing on its own during warmer weather. The intermediate difficulty level makes this an accessible project for knitters with some experience, offering an opportunity to develop colour-work and shaping skills.
