Skacel Sunrise Toss-on Tee

What is Being Made

The Skacel Sunrise Toss-on Tee is a customizable knit sweater from the Color of the Year 2021 Collection. This garment is designed as a versatile, easy-to-personalize tee that allows knitters to adjust width, length, and sleeve circumference to create a perfectly fitted garment suited to individual preferences and body measurements.

Construction Method and Techniques

This tee is constructed using a bottom-up knitting approach, meaning the garment is worked from the hem upward. The pattern is worked flat on circular needles, then seamed together at the completion. The design incorporates lace stitch work throughout, which is introduced early in the pattern to familiarize knitters with the stitch repeat before committing to the full garment. The lace pattern requires careful attention to gauge and stitch accuracy, making a test swatch essential before beginning the main project.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The Sunrise Toss-on Tee features a lace stitch pattern that repeats throughout the garment. Knitters are advised to cast on 50 stitches and work 4 pattern repeats in their gauge swatch to become comfortable with the lace stitch sequence before starting the body of the tee. The pattern is designed to be worked repeatedly across the width and length of the garment, creating an elegant, open-work texture.

Customization and Sizing

One of the defining features of this pattern is its flexibility. Knitters can independently choose their desired bust width, garment length, and sleeve circumference from the provided sizing chart (sizes A through F). Length options accommodate various heights, while sleeve width options are paired with length selections. The pattern recommends wearing the finished tee with approximately 9–10 inches of positive ease for comfortable fit. A comprehensive sizing chart is included to help estimate total yarn yardage requirements based on individual customization choices.

Yarn and Materials

The Sunrise Toss-on Tee is designed to be knit in HiKoo® Popcycle, a sustainable yarn blend composed of 50% Bamboo and 50% Polyester from recycled plastic bottles. Each hank contains 305 yards and weighs 100 grams. Depending on the size and customization selections chosen, the pattern requires between 3 and 6 hanks of yarn.

Needles and Notions

  • Needles: Skacel by addi® Bamboo circular needles in 3.25mm (approximately US 3), 24 inches in length. The pattern notes that individual gauge variation may require needles ranging from US 2 to US 5, and specifically recommends using bamboo or wooden needles with this yarn because the Popcycle yarn is somewhat slick and benefits from the grip provided by natural materials.
  • Additional notions: Removeable stitch markers and a blunt tapestry needle for seaming and weaving in ends.

Gauge and Pattern Notes

Achieving correct gauge is emphasized as critically important for this pattern. Knitters must knit a swatch before beginning, casting on 50 stitches and working 4 complete pattern repeats. This investment of time ensures proper fit and yarn yardage accuracy. Because the yarn is slick, bamboo or wooden needles are recommended over metal to help maintain consistent tension and stitch control throughout the project.
